Edward Burra was one of the most distinctive and imaginative British artists of the 20th century. Working almost exclusively on paper in watercolour, gouache, and pencil, Burra developed a unique visual language—by turns surreal, satirical, and deeply observant. He drew inspiration from modern urban life, theatre, coastal towns, and processional pageantry, rendering the world around him with wit, rhythm, and an uncanny eye for the peculiar.
The Procession is a striking example of Burra’s mature style. Executed in gouache and pencil on paper and bearing the artist’s studio stamp at upper right, the work measures 25 x 19 inches (63.5 x 48.5 cm). This piece exemplifies Burra’s ability to animate figures with theatrical presence and to compose scenes that feel at once dreamlike and socially grounded.
The painting comes with excellent provenance, having been offered at Sotheby’s London on July 3, 2002 (Lot 256) as part of the sale Works from the Estate of Edward Burra, Lady Richie of Dundee and Associated Owners. A pencil drawing of dancers appears on the reverse—further highlighting Burra’s lifelong engagement with movement, spectacle, and the human form.
Though he worked largely in isolation in his hometown of Rye, Sussex, Burra’s influence on British modernism is profound. His work is held in major public collections, including Tate Britain, The British Museum, and MoMA New York. Today, he is celebrated as a master of the offbeat and the extraordinary—an artist whose vision remains startlingly fresh and culturally resonant.
