Good condition
A student of Cabanel, Hédouin and Laurens at the Beaux-Arts, he exhibited at the Salon from 1875. He was a friend of Sargent and Helleu, other great painters of the Belle Epoque who, like him, were also great social portraitists.
Appreciated by Tsar Alexander III, he was invited to Russia in 1894 to paint numerous portraits of aristocrats and members of the imperial family.
Along with Constant, Gervex, Maignan and Merson, he decorated the new Salle Favart, destroyed in 1887. He also designed the “Paris” panel for the main room of the Train Bleu restaurant at the Gare de Lyon.
He began teaching at the Beaux-Arts in 1905, and was appointed painter to the army in 1914.
Very famous in his day, many of his works are held in museums around the world: Ottawa, Chicago, Manchester, San Francisco, Washington, Beaune, Bordeaux, Marseille ,Orsay, Petit Palais, Rouen, Rennes, London, Moscow, etc....
