About the Item

A Striking, 1950s Mid-Century Modern Ink Drawing of a Dancing Couple by Notable Chicago Artist, Harold Haydon (Am. 1909-1994). Depicting an embracing couple engaged in the classic, romantic "Apache Dance," or La Danse Apache, a highly dramatic French dance from the early 20th century that was associated with Parisian street culture. While not neccessarily involving a literal sailor, the dance was inspired by the reputation of "apaches," a contemporary name for young street gang members, and is often portrayed as a stormy argument between a young man and woman. The drawing is ink on gray toned paper, dating from 1950. Artwork size: 11 1/2 x 9 inches (unframed), matted archivally to 18 x 14 inches (ready to frame). Signed and dated "Harold Haydon 17-V-50", lower right. Provenance: Estate of the artist. One from a small series of drawings based on "La Danse Apache" created by Haydon in May of 1950 (see our other gallery 1st Dibs listings) Harold Emerson Haydon was born in 1909 in Fort William, Ontario, Canada. He moved to America, settling in Chicago with his family in 1917 and became a naturalized U.S. citizen in 1941. Haydon attended the University of Chicago Lab School and the University of Chicago, where he earned a Bachelor’s Degree and Master’s Degree in Philosophy. He also studied at the Art Institute of Chicago in the early 1930s. Haydon became a Professor of Art at the University of Chicago from 1944-1975 and later taught as an instructor at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago from 1975-1981. From 1975-1982, Haydon also taught as an Adjunct Professor of Fine Arts at Indiana University. He is recognized for his vibrant, painterly landscapes of New England, Vermont and Canada, as well as his dynamic urban views of the city of Chicago and its picturesque lakefront. Harold Haydon served as the respected, longtime art critic of the Chicago Sun-Times newspaper from 1963-1985. He died in Chicago in 1994.
