Harold Stevenson
'Untitled Sketch Men with Oxen' by Harold Stevenson, Pencil Drawing on Paper

1983

About the Item

This 45" x 31" work was drawn by Harold Stevenson in 1983 and is presented in a multi-matted black frame. The drawing depicts three standing figures, each adorned in classical-style robes. The figures are outlined with fine lines, and the robes showcase detailed folds and drapery, emphasizing the work's realistic style and movement. The central figure holds a piece of fabric or cloth, which appears to be draped over the back of one of the two bulls that are depicted. The figures are barefoot, and their attire and posture suggest an ancient or classical theme. The animals, presumed to be bulls, are positioned in front and behind the central figure, with only a portion of their bodies each visible. Stevenson utilizes detailed line work, emphasizing contour lines to delineate form and the monochromatic palette draws focus to the purity of the form and line. Harold Moncreau Stevenson, Jr., passed away on October 21, 2018 in Idabel, Oklahoma at 89 years of age. Stevenson was born at home on March 11, 1929, in Idabel, Oklahoma. Noted for his portraitures, Stevenson was primarily self-taught and painted prolifically throughout his life. He maintained a downtown Idabel art studio when he was 10 years old. While attending high school, he served as president of the art club, president of the student council, and art editor of the yearbook. He graduated from Idabel High School in 1947 studied art at the University of Oklahoma and in 1949, was awarded one of ten national scholarships to attend the New York Art Students League, where he was under the tutelage of Yasuo Kuniyoshi. One notable cohort was Robert Rauschenberg, the artist that replaced Stevenson in the 1963 Guggenheim exhibition, Six Painters and the Object. Stevenson befriended Peggy Guggenheim in Venice and exhibited in the 1962 Piccola Biennale where his piece, Finger of God, was purchased and later donated to the Oklahoma City Museum of Art. While living in Paris, Stevenson exhibited Le Sensuel Fantastique, the portrait of his partner, Lord Timothy Willoughby de Eresby, of London. The exhibition was featured in LIFE magazine. Stevenson is credited with starring in Andy Warhol’s first films, Harold (1963) and KISS (1963-64), as well as appearing as himself in Paul Morrissey’s HEAT (1971). In 1962, Stevenson exhibited The Eye of Lightening Billy in the Sidney Janis gallery exhibition, New Realists. Stevenson exhibited in the 1980 "La Famille des Portraits" at the Louvre Museum in Paris, France. In addition to the Guggenheim, Stevenson’s collections can be found at the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Smithsonian Institution, Washington, DC; Museum of Modern Art, New York; Yale University Art Gallery; Blanton Gallery at the University of Texas, Austin; Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; and private collections.

'White Tiger,' by Vojna Bastovanovic Casteel, is a framed Watercolor on Paper painting from 2021. The work on paper features an image of a white tiger drinking from a pool of water. The tiger is rendered in cool tones of mostly grays and blues. The same blue values of the Tiger's one visible eye are used in the rendering of the pool. Award-winning Serbian artist Vojna Bastovanovic Casteel is known for artworks with natural elements, like people and animals (usually wild tigers and lions), that show selective flashes of realism often distorted by an abstract background. In her professional career, she has created hundreds of square meters of portrait mosaics for public spaces and large churches...

This 11.25 x 15.25 work on paper features a lone, seated, female dancer viewed from the back. The figure is twisting toward the viewer as she begins to look over her right shoulder. Her legs are pulled toward her body with the left leg crossed over the right. The isolation of the seated figure within the ground of the page lends a vulnerable quality to the work. The 16 x 20 dark brown mat has a window size of 11.25 x 15.25. Bio: Jim Cobb, until recently was hanging his work on Canyon Rd in Santa Fe, New Mexico.
