About the artist:
Lawrence Arthur Colley Panton was a painter, illustrator, commercial artist and educator who was born in Egremont, England. He emigrated to Toronto, Canada in 1911 and lived there for the rest of his life. His mediums were oil, watercolour, tempera, chalk, charcoal, gouache, graphite, ink, mixed mediums and linocuts. His subjects were landscapes, cityscapes, seascapes and figures. His styles were realist, representational, impressionist, semi abstract and figurative. His mature style could be termed modernist, as it was more concerned with conveying the feeling, mood and drama of the subject, rather than an accurate depiction of its outward appearance.
He was primarily self taught; however, he did study at the Ontario College of Art and the Central Technical School under Charles M. Manly and Fred Challener. Later in life he studied tempera painting with William C. Palmer. He taught at the Central Technical School (1924-1926), the Western Technical School (1926 -1937), the Northern Vocational School (1937-1951) and was Principle at the Ontario College of Art (1951-1954).
He was a member of the Ontario Society of Artists (1925; President, 1931-1937), the Royal Canadian Academy (ARCA 1934, RCA 1943), the Canadian Group of Painters (1949), the Canadian Society of Graphic Artists (1923), the Canadian Society of Painter-Etchers and Engravers (1924), the Federation of Canadian Artists (1942; Chairman, Ontario Division, 1945), and a founder of the Canadian Society of Painters in Watercolour (1925; President, 1929 - 1933).
He exhibited with the RCA from 1927 until 1953. He has also exhibited with the organizations listed above in venues that include Tate (London), the Art Gallery of Ontario (Toronto) and the National Gallery of Canada (Ottawa). There was a memorial exhibition by the Ontario Society of Artists at the Art Gallery of Ontario in 1955; and a retrospective exhibition at Hart House (University of Toronto) in 1974. In 1990 the Art Gallery of Ontario had another retrospective of his work titled "Towards a Lyrical Abstraction: The Art of L.A.C. Panton".
His works are in numerous private and public collections. The public collections include the Winnipeg Art Gallery, the London Public Art Gallery and Art Museum (Ontario), the Art Gallery of Ontario (Toronto), the National Gallery of Canada (Ottawa), the Owens Museum of Mount Allison University (Sackville, NB), the Ottawa Art Gallery and the National Gallery of South Australia (Adelaide).
As a prominent Canadian artist his work is discussed in many magazine and newspaper articles. He is also listed in A Dictionary of Canadian Artists (1974), by Colin S. MacDonald, published by Canadian Paperbacks Ltd. (8 volumes); in The Collector's Dictionary of Canadian Artists at Auction (2001), by Anthony R. Westbridge and Diana L. Bodnar, published by Westbridge Publications Ltd. (4 volumes); and in the 1999 and 2006 versions of E. Benezit, published by Grund.
His work is also illustrated and discussed in "Art Gallery of Ontario, The Canadian Collection"(1970), by Helen Pepall Bradfield, published by McGraw-Hill Co. of Canada Ltd. (603 pgs, B&W); in Four Decades (1972) by Paul Duval, published by Clark Irwin & Co. Ltd. She spent years as a professional puppeteer and set designer, and developing her own unique watercolor painting style. Charlotte’s use of pointillism. Charlotte Huntley AWS, June Workshop Instructor “Charlotte Huntley has special insights into color and fresh approaches to cliche subject matter. Her work in watercolor is truly unique. Charlotte adapts the Pointillism of Seurat and other post-Impressionists and makes it her own in watercolor. With Pointillism, distinct points of primary colors create the impression of a wide selection of secondary colors. The technique relies on the perceptive ability of the eye and mind of the viewer to mix the color spots into a fuller range of tones. Charlotte truly makes the most of this style of painting. Over her illustrious career, Huntley has been awarded a signature membership in 29 watercolor societies, including the American Watercolor Society, California Watercolor Association, Transparent Watercolor Soc. of America, Northwest Watercolor Society, and Watercolor West.
