About the Item
Ce dessin est une réplique par Ludovico Marchetti de son tableau présenté à l’Exposition Universelle de 1878, "Avant le tournoi", reproduit dans la Gazette des beaux-arts du 1er juillet 1878 (p. 405). Fourmillant de personnages et de détails, l’oeuvre est très appréciée de la critique, qui la juge bien composée et « à ranger parmi les plus pétillantes toiles de l’exposition italienne ».
Spécialisé dans les scènes de genre, historiques et contemporaines, Ludovico Marchetti travaille notamment pour le marchand Goupil et pour la presse illustrée. Le château de Blois lui fournit le cadre de nombreuses compositions, comme celle-ci. En février 1888, il fournit d'ailleurs à "Paris illustré" plusieurs vues du château, dont une de la cheminée ornée des initiales de Louis XII et d’Anne de Bretagne qui figure en partie gauche de notre dessin.
