Valie, dream tent, 1966
Black stone and white gouache, black ink on cardboard
Signed lower left
Poem entitled “Valie!” written in pen on verso, dated “1966” and located in “Paris”.
24 x 28.5 cm
Born in Paris in 1938, Michel Bron dit Valentin is a painter, draughtsman, poet and musician active in Paris. A self-taught artist who grew up near the Louvre Museum, he was introduced to painting at an early age through masterpieces by the Old Masters, particularly Flemish and Dutch. He then moved to the Halles district. Gifted with an excellent visual memory, he was impressed by the colorful characters who populated the surrounding streets. Michel Bron later moved to the Left Bank and became a fixture in the Montparnasse district, where he occupied a studio on the sixth floor of a building at 49 rue Liancourt.
Described as “the master watchmaker of strange times” by art critic André Parinaud, Michel Bron imagines a limitless phantasmagorical universe, populated by strange creatures.
The drawing-poem on cardboard presented here depicts a marquee exposed to the four winds, an animated, almost living marquee personified by the poem entitled “Valie” and dated “1966” on the reverse of the work (translation) :
“Valie!
She has the muscles of a bird,
The head of a dream capital.
Ears riveted with pillowcases,
A chest of medals for the lord,
Eyes of blue gifts
And present hands for friends.
A round good back in the folds,
A nose like a Paris horn,
Les cheveux bien en queue,
Youthful bicycle knees,
Legs to her schoolgirl's neck
Le pied danseur du bonheur.
Paris.
Bron.
1966.”
