About the Item

"Gentrification" is an original piece by Sean 9 Lugo, known artistically for his murals and street art. The piece is made from acrylic and ink on mixed media panel and was originally debuted in Lugo's recent solo exhibition "Storyteller." Artwork measures 50"h x 74"w and ships in the pictured white float frame. In "Storyteller", Lugo displays the cinematic experiences he had growing up in East Coast urban cities in the 1990s through a variety of mediums: painting, collage, and illustration. As he recalls his adolescent meeting spots and made-up games, he rediscovers how he was first captivated by art and how it informs his practice today. Lugo strives to authentically represent the people and places in his stories, in a similar vein to the artists of the Golden Age of Illustration in the early twentieth century. Lugo studies the process of Howard Pyle and Saturday Evening Post covers by Norman Rockwell, and adapts them into new versions of nostalgic Americana starring the Black and Latine figures of Lugo’s youth. The everyday figures like the barber and street taggers become monumental in highly detailed arrangements, all charged with Lugo’s emotional attachments and familial connections. The first time Lugo saw a Norman Rockwell piece was sitting in a pediatrician’s office as a child. Although he hated doctor visits, he was captivated by the posters of Rockwell’s illustrations, including the iconic piece of Ruby Bridges being escorted to school. He marveled at the narratives that were conveyed so vividly in Rockwell’s work, supported by seemingly trivial details that make up an entire person’s identity. In gratitude for the inspiration, Lugo has recreated his favorite Rockwell images in Storyteller to provide honest looks into his personal history. Lugo is compelled to showcase his own library of symbolism and references that audiences can stumble upon when viewing the work. Lugo states, “Howard Pyle encouraged 'living in a subject,' rather than merely illustrating people and places. This idea of creating dynamic illustrations by connecting emotionally with a story is where I found myself when creating this body of work. Stories, previously faded in my memory, came back to life and allowed me to be a storyteller of my block.” Sean 9 Lugo‘s artwork is reflective of the diverse culture that surrounded him as a child growing up in Hudson County, N.J. with parents from Puerto Rico and Cuba. His street art is known for representing the duality of both Latin and American culture and experiences through masks that can either misconceive or stereotype perceptions. Sean 9 Lugo’s artwork has been shown in solo and group exhibitions around the United States including The National Liberty Museum, University City Arts League, Mesa Contemporary Art Museum, Paradigm Gallery, Deep Space Gallery, Jinxed Fishtown, LITM, 58 Gallery, Dis Micro Gallery, Northern Soul, Thinkspace Gallery, Arch Enemy Arts, Clutter Gallery, Inner State Gallery, Honolulu Museum, 17 Frost Gallery, My Plastic Heart, and Succulent Gallery. His murals can be seen from New York to the Dominican Republic through projects with Track Takeover, Wall Therapy, Welling Court, Arte Sano, Central Ave Sid, Arts Org NYC, Fashion Institute of Technology, HAHAxParadigm, NJ Beer Company, and Savage Habbit. He has been featured in national and international publications such as Metro, Al Día, WHYY, WXPN, Streets Dept, Brooklyn Street Art, Fecal Face, Street Art NYC, Robots Will Kill, News 12 New Jersey, and Jersey Journal.

"Roxbury" Massachusetts, Acrylic, Street Scene, Winner Student Prize
Located in Detroit, MI
SALE ONE WEEK ONLY “Roxbury” is a stunning landscape of architecture and city deleterious. Moon-Joo Lee received her MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art, Department of Painting in 2003 and received the schools' Top Prize with this painting. “Roxbury” subsequently was on display at Chrysler’s World Headquarters for a period of time. While at Cranbrook she began to document the ubiquitous construction sites skirting Detroit and similar cities across the country. The transitory urban fabric became her compelling subject, emblematic of fluctuating socio-economic conditions and a widespread culture of uncertainty. - Joe Houston of Cranbrook Art Museum. Lee’s painting “Roxbury” captures the cycle of construction, destruction and reconstruction that perpetually transforms the American city scene. In this image, a business that boasts NEW in its signage is already in the process of being destroyed. This could be a scene of bombing or environmental damage, but per Moon-Joo Lee’s aesthetics, the mountainous terrain of assorted refuse is there to remind the viewer that perhaps new and better do not necessarily mean that nor do they guarantee positive change. Lee's contemporary landscape underscores the extent to which nature has been supplanted by a manufactured environment, portraying rampant cultural transformation as a modern expression of manifest destiny. Moon-Joo Lee is one of the many well-known artists who attended The Cranbrook Academy of Art in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, that was designed by architect and faculty member, Eliel Saarinen who collaborated with Charles and Ray Eames on chair and furniture design. It is the country’s top ranked, graduate-only program in architecture, design and fine art. Each year, just 75 students are invited to study and live on the landmark Saarinen-designed campus which features: private studios, state-of-the art workshops, the renowned Cranbrook Art Museum and 300 acres of forests, lakes and streams, all a short drive from the city of Detroit. The focus at Cranbrook is on studio practice in one of ten disciplines including Architecture, 2D and 3D Design, Ceramics, Fiber, Metalsmithing, Painting, Photography, Print Media, and Sculpture. The program is anchored by celebrated Artists- and Designers-in-Residence, one for each discipline, all of whom live and practice on campus alongside the graduate students. Numerous creative artists who are alumni of Cranbrook include: Harry Bertoia, Florence Knoll, Jack Lenor Larsen, Donald Lipski, Duane Hanson, Nick Cave, Hani Rashid, George Nelson, Urban Jupena (Nationally recognized fiber artist), Artis Lane (the first African-American artist to have her sculpture, "Sojourner Truth," commissioned for the Emancipation Hall in the Capital Visitor Center in Washington DC), Cory Puhlman (televised Pastry Chef extraordinaire), Thom O’Connor (Lithographs), Paul Evans (Brutalist-inspired sculpted metal furnishings), Eugene Caples (small bronze images/abstract), Morris Brose (Bronze Sculptures), Herb Babcock (blown glass), Larry Butcher (mixed media), Lauren Anais Hussey (Abstract), Andrea Eis (film, photography), Lilian Swann Saarinen (Sculpture), Douglas Semivan...
