About the Item
Clearly an ironic title, 'Bedtime Story,' conjures up homey childhood experiences -- not over-sized, cigar-smoking, and alcohol-abusing, French soldiers.
The artist who made Bedtime Story (Male French WWII Soldiers with Kepis, Drinking, and Cigars), about 1939, is unknown. It could be J. B. Dolitro, but that's a guess and a deep Google search didn't turn up anything useful.
This ink drawing was clearly made by a skilled draftsman. Male, probably, as it's such an intimate male interior space. The distinctive hat, the French 'kepi,' was mostly dropped by the French army after 1940 except for officers and/or ceremonial purposes.
It is signed in pencil (sadly indecipherable), and titled on the reverse. Also on the reverse is an annotation 'No. 10, p. 13.' This could indicate it was used for a publication of some kind -- page 13? Any thoughts on this would be hugely appreciated.
