About the Item

HANS HOFMANN The Wind Mill (XXV), c. 1930-31 Ink on paper 10 1/2 x 13 1/2 inches 26.7 x 34.3 cm Signed, lower right: H Hofmann -- Hans Hofmann (b. 1800, Weissenburg, Bavaria, Germany) studied art in Munich and later, in Paris where he lived from 1904 to 1914. He returned to Germany in 1914 and, in 1915, opened his own art school in Munich, the Schule für Bildene Kunst. In 1930, Hofmann traveled to the United States to teach a summer session at the University of California, Berkeley. After returning to Munich for the winter, Hofmann returns to California to teach at the Chouinard School of Art in Los Angeles, and again at Berkeley, until 1932. Due to the growing hostility towards intellectuals in Germany, he makes the decision to stay in America and relocates to New York. There, he assumes a teaching position at The Arts Students League of New York and, in 1933, opens the eponymous Hans Hofmann School of Fine Arts and a summer school in Provincetown, Massachussettes in 1934. During his lifetime, Hofmann's work was the subject of exhibitions at the California Palace of the Legion of Honor in San Francisco, CA (1931); Art of This Century Gallery, New York, NY (1944); Addison Gallery of American Art, Andover, MA (1948); Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, NY (1957); the XXX Venice Biennale, Venice, Italy (1960); The Museum of Modern Art, New York, NY (1963), and elsewhere. His work is included in select collections including the Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris, France; Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Washington, D.C.; Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Los Angeles, CA; The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, NY; Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, MA; The Museum of Modern Art, New York, NY; National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C.; National Gallery of Australia, Canberra, Australia; Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York, NY; Tate Collection, London, United Kingdom; and the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, NY. Hofmann died in 1966 at the age of 88 in New York, NY.

Song of Love
By Hans Hofmann
Located in Palm Desert, CA
"Song of Love" is an abstract Post-War oil painting on canvas created by Hans Hofmann in 1952. The artwork is 36.25 x 48.25 inches and is 45.25 x 57.25 x 2 inches with the frame, weighing less than 50 lbs. It is signed on the lower right, "Hans Hofmann" and also signed verso, "Hans Hofmann". Hofmann's art is characterized by its expressive use of color planes, often overlapping and intersecting to create a sense of tension and harmony simultaneously. With the delicate mark-making and use of negative space across the canvas, “Song of Love” is reminiscent of the automatic drawings and paintings of Surrealists Andre Masson and Joan Miró, blended with the drips of paint in the large blue swaths of the Abstract Expressionist style. Provenance: The Artist, 1952-1958 Collection Harvey Kaplan, Chicago,1958-1962 Michael Reese...
