About the Item

30"x30" ink and watercolor on paper, signed on reverse by artist. This painting is presented floated in finely crafted shadowbox frame. Representational imagery of a butterfly and hardware such as wood, nails, and ropes. Washes of colors of bright yellows contrasted by underlaid purple and rose tones in this painting by Jesse Lambert, create the background for the graphic black ink line work of wooden planks, tree trunks and rope. A visage from the artist's youth building a treehouse, this painting summons thoughts of Summer in a wistful remembrance. This painting is from as series of ink and watercolor paintings that depict ad-hoc structures, similar to tree houses or forts. These structure Jesse Lambert is referencing are constructed out of found and reclaimed bits of wood and debris such as bent nails, string, cloth, clothespins, discarded tools and other household implements. Evoking the universal human desire for shelter and protection, these assemblages reference domestic spaces, but fail to function as those spaces normally would. Paintings of these subject matter show the accumulated effects of time on objects and our environment. Jesse Lambert was born in Hudson, NY and grew up in rural New Hampshire and New York City. Jesse received a BFA from Cooper Union and a MFA in Painting from Hunter College. Jesse has exhibited his work at The Front Room Gallery, Brooklyn; White Columns, NYC; Klaus Von Nichtssagend Gallery, NYC; Ningyo Editions, Watertown, MA; Matter Gallery in Portland, ME; Miller Block Gallery, Boston, MA; Joseloff Gallery, Hartford, CT among other venues. His work has been exhibited at NOVA and Bridge art fairs in Chicago and Aqua art fair in Miami. He has attended residencies at Skowhegan, the Vermont Studio School in Johnson, Vermont and the Armenian Center for Contemporary Experimental Art in Yerevan, Armenia. Jesse's exhibitions have been reviewed on Hyperallergic, artnet, in the The New York Times, The Boston Globe, The Brooklyn Rail, The Yale Daily News and The Aravot Daily, Yerevan, Armenia, and featured in New American Paintings, amongst other publications. He currently lives in Jackson Heights, NY and works in Long Island City, NY.

Untitled #4
By Jerry Opper
Located in San Francisco, CA
This artwork "Untitled #1" c.1970 is a colors pastel and crayon on thick paper by American artist Jerry Opper, 1924-2014. It is hand signed in pencil at the lower right corner by the artist. The image size is 26.5 x 20.5 inches, sheet size is 28.5 x 22.5 inches. It is in excellent condition, there are pastel marks on the margin all around the artwork and also on the back, see picture #1. About the artist: Jerry Opper was born in Cleveland, Ohio, on September 5, 1924. He moved to Los Angeles with his family in 1933. After graduating from Hollywood High School, he worked in movie studios and attended art classes at Chouinard Art Institute. In May 1942, Opper was drafted into the army and was then able to study at the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center while his outfit was stationed in Colorado. Later he was sent to Guam and was discharged in December 1945. Opper returned to Chouinard and his work in movie studios until 1947, when he moved to San Francisco. He enrolled as a full-time student at the California School of Fine Arts (now SFAI) and received his diploma in June of 1950. In 1948, Opper met his wife Gertrud Ruth Friedmann, daughter of artist Gustav Friedmann, whose works are also in the Lost Art Salon collection. It was love at first sight and a few weeks after their first encounter at the Black Cat in San Francisco's North Beach, they got married and enjoyed a passionate, life-long romance. Shortly after he finished school, Opper worked briefly as a decorator’s assistant and then started his career as a commercial artist, working for several firms such as Fibreboard, Beatrix Food and Precision. Working full-time and dedicating himself to having a rich family life occupied most of Opper's time, but he continued to be creative. He was above all a family man with the pride of having raised two exceptional daughters, Erika and Jody. Year after year, Opper would painstakingly craft their Halloween costumes...
