About the Item

Albert Wein had a retrospective and he was called a classical modernist by art critics. He is primarily regarded as one of America's great sculptors but he loved doing drawings, watercolors and paintings too. And while on a family vacation to Monhegan, Wein enjoyed doing a series of works depicting the island and its intimate spots. As seen here, he in a facile manner captures a rhythmic way of depicting the houses and undulating land around them in vibrant, harmonious color. Wein was the sort of artist who was so gifted that most anything came easily to him. And his magic was in capturing whatever his subject was - in a way that rings true to the viewer. This watercolor measures 9 x 12 inside its matting so our listed size is the framed dimension. It has been recently framed but in a frame that was made a while ago that is in the modernist style. It compliments the rolling lines in the work with its soft rolling back reverse profile and lively gold finish. The piece is signed in the lower left. Provenance: Estate of the artist descended in the family Wein was a master artist at anything he put his hand to. He did a series of works on Monhegan Island and captured the feel of the island with his sure handed, strong color strokes. Done in the American modernist broad style. This piece is not framed as best to be framed to go with one's interior. Albert Wein's artistic prowess in painting is a testament to his deep-seated academic training, a fundamental aspect that serves as the bedrock for his avant-garde approach to modernism. In a departure from the trends of many contemporaries in the twentieth century, Wein adeptly harmonizes his classical foundation with a progressive, modernist sensibility. What sets Wein apart, particularly in his works on paper, is the tangible essence of movement and dynamism that permeates his creations. Whether employing rapid brushstrokes or deliberate ink lines, he injects his compositions with a vitality that transcends the inherent static nature of the medium. This dynamic quality not only imparts life to the landscapes he portrays but also establishes a captivating visual dialogue, forging a profound connection between the artist, the subject, and the viewer. Wein's ability to seamlessly fuse tradition with innovation marks him as a distinctive figure in the annals of art history, leaving an indelible impression on those who engage with his evocative oeuvre.

Boothbay Harbor, Maine from the Hill
Located in Greenwich, CT
Best known for his painterly landscape views, Oberteuffer developed a fresh and vigorous style, using a subdued color palette with agile brushstrokes that was influenced by French Impressionism. Boothbay Harbor from the Hill is a wonderful example of this style of painting and shows Oberteuffer’s mastery of subtle color. It is an added plus that Oberteuffer has specifically referenced a clearly identifiable locale- Boothbay Harbor- in his title and additionally denoted that the view was painted from the hillside, potentially capturing actual homes and buildings of the time. Framed in a Gold Leaf Whistler style frame of exceptional quality. The painting has vivid and fresh color and creates a window in any room. The canvas inside the frame measures 30 x 24 inches.
