Auguste Mayer was a marine painter from his youth, a genre he has continued to cultivate ever since, and obtained permission to travel on state ships to the Orient, Scandinavia, Holland, etc. Mayer executed a large number of paintings, which show great skill in brushwork and scrupulous care in reproducing naval scenes faithfully. In addition, he composed well. Auguste Mayer also produced numerous drawings, a number of which, illustrating Brittany in particular, were lithographed by Victor Petit and published in Voyages pittoresques et romantiques dans l'ancienne France. Bretagne by Charles Nodier, Justin Taylor and Alphonse de Cayeux, published in 1845-1846. Auguste Mayer was made an officer of the Legion of Honour in 1867. He was a professor of drawing at the École navale, where Henri Zuber was one of his students. His works are kept in various museums, many of them in the Musée National de la Marine in Paris, the Musée des Beaux Arts in Brest and the National Museum in Stockholm.
