Signed lower right, 'H. Hammond' for Horace Murray Hammond (British, circa 1879-1966) and dated 1921. A luminously painted, bucolic view of harvest time in England with the lilac of the evening casting a soft light over the contented horses and loaded hay-cart, as the harvesters come to the end of their day's labors. Son of the noted landscape painter, Robert John Hammond, Horace Hammond was born and raised in Warwickshire. In 1927, he moved, first to Worcestershire and then to London. Over the course of a long and successful career, Hammond exhibited widely, including at the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists, the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool and at London's Royal Academy, among numerous other locations. Signed lower right, 'DeMartis' for James Joseph DeMartis (American, 1926-1996) and painted circa 1965. Born in Queens, New York, James Joseph DeMartis served with distinction in World War II and was decorated at the Battle of the Bulge. He subsequently attended painting classes at New York's Museum of Modern Art (1946-47) and, later, at the Art Students League of New York. He then enrolled at the California School of Fine Arts in Santa Monica, California until 1949, before leaving t study in Europe in 1950. He settled in Florence, Italy where he attended L’Accademia di Belle Arti di Firenze (1950-54). While continuing to study painting, he participated in several group and one-man shows in Italy and Switzerland. In 1956, DeMartis returned to New York at the height of the American Abstract Expressionist movement. He settled with his new family in Brooklyn and, after participating in a series of grass-roots galleries opened with fellow artists, he opened the Armory Gallery and studio in Manhattan. He also exhibited in other Manhattan galleries and at the National Arts Club. In 1961, De Martis was awarded the prestigious Emily Lowe Award for Painting. This led to to shows at the Ward Egglestone, ROKO, Pierantonio and Artemis West galleries from 1962-68. He then returned to Europe to participate in a group show in Florence. Upon his return, he opened the Brownstone Gallery in the Park Slope section of Brooklyn, where he exhibited his own and others’ works until 1988. James De Martis exhibited widely and with success including at one-man shows in Tokyo, Brooklyn, New York, Sarasota, Florida, San Francisco and Santa Fe. Beautiful watercolor and gouache on archival paper by the well known Maine artist Bill Paxton. The watercolor depicts what Portland harbor in Maine looked like in 1910 with sailing vessels of the era moored in the harbor. Signed lower right by the artist. Titled verso. Circa 1975. Condition is excellent and is finely matted and framed. The artwork is matted and framed in a thin gold leaf custom gallery frame. Overall framed measurements are 17.5 by 21.75 inches. Provenance: Sarasota, Florida estate. William (Bill) Paxton 1930—2007 William Paxton, born August 5, 1930 in Lewiston, was one of Maine’s top selling artists. He had a passion for painting and from a young age he was known for his talents in sketching. Paxton captured many popular Maine scenes with watercolor, acrylic, and oils. His work also includes historical scenes he referenced in books from as early as the 1920’s, painting locomotives, aircraft, and war scenes. Paxton’s art is sold all over the world. As a student at Bridgton Academy, he was featured in his yearbook. It states, “When artist Bill picks up his pen, we all stand at attention, for his remarks and pictures are certainly worth mention.” He wanted to pursue a career selling his art, but it was during the time of the Great Depression. Also in his younger years, Paxton had an interest in skiing and won a medal for Second Highest Ski Jump. From there he went to flying and received a certification for Second-in-Command, to fly alongside the captain in a C-46F type of aircraft.
