About the Item

Stunning late 19th century landscape of misty purple hills dotted with small sheep in the Scottish highlands near Dunkeld by Boston artist Miss H. L. Radford (19th Century). Signed and dated "H L Radford 95" in the lower right corner. On verso is an inscription noting the location of the landscape "Hills near Dunkeld / To my dear friend Agnes - / As a remembrance of the time / we saw the Scotch Hills together." Presented in a vintage distressed gilt frame with a light grey mat and glass. Image size: 12"H x 16"W. Miss Radford was a Boston artist in during the 1890s and studied at the School of Art at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (1892-93). She traveled to England on the Cunard Lines on the Steamer Gallia in June of 1895 and returned on September 26, 1895 after a painting excursion to Scotland and France. An adept watercolor artist, she painted scenes of the Highlands and the French Country side including "Hills Near Dunkeld (Scotland) and "Peasant with Faggots" a watercolor dated 1895; two water colors known to exist form her trip abroad in 1895. One Jan Ward Howe's (suffragette) New England Women's Club at 5 Park Street Boston. Exhibited: Boston Art students Association Exhibition at the Boston Museum of Fine Art 1892- 1902 From the The Boston Art students Association Founded in 1879. Incorporated 1888. The object being to supplement the academic training of the School of Art connected with the Museum of Fine Arts, to assist its members in their artistic career, to cultivate a spirit of fraternity among art students, and to promote the interests of art in the city of Boston. The Association is composed mainly of the students of the Art School of the Museum of Fine Arts. The membership is divided into four classes : Active, Associate, Life, and Honorary. Only those, however, who are practicing or studying art or are engaged in a profession allied to art are eligible for membership. Under the patronage of the Association there are life classes held during the winter months, afternoon and evening. Classes in pen and ink for process reproduction, composition, and a portrait practice class. The classes in pen and ink are free to the members of the Association and to the students of the School of Fine Arts connected with the Museum. For the life classes and portrait practice class a small fee is charged the members. All the classes, however, are open to students of art, and all information may be obtained from Thos. N. This watercolor by Charles Demetropoulos depicts a classical French Academic-style building which was designed in 1862 by architect William G. Preston as the new home of the Boston Society for Natural History, which had been founded in 1830. In the 1860’s, many of Boston’s cultural institutions relocated here to the Back Bay, the elegant residential district being built on the tidal marshes behind the city. This artwork "Sonoma County Landscape" 1901, is a watercolor on paper by noted California artist Elizabeth Hoen, 1868-1955. It is signed and dated at the lower right corner by the artist. The artwork (image) size is 5.75 x 8.65 inches, framed size is 13 x 15.65 inches. Custom framed in a silver decorated frame, with beige matting. It is in good condition, the paper have 3 vertical soft creases that cross the image. About the artist: Born in Santa Rosa, California to a pioneering California family, Elizabeth Hoen was known for her watercolor paintings, many of them landscapes, in impressionist style. Her father, Berthold Hoen started a trading post in the Carillo adobe, the first building erected in the Sonoma Valley. He also helped survey and lay out the city of Santa Rosa. Elizabeth Hoen is not only the first painter to have their work cataloged into the Sonoma County Museum’s collection, but she was also a prolific artist in California in the late 19th and early 20th centuries and maintained a studio during a period when California art was largely dominated by men.
