About the Item

French mid century monochrome watercolour of a church and surrounding buildings by Henri Royere. The painting is signed bottom right and presented in a plain wood frame under glass. A dramatic painting of a group of ancient buildings in a landscape. There is a church with its bell tower and other surrounding buildings, probably a monastery, with their distinctive tiled roofs. In the foreground a group of olive trees gnarled by age. Royere has created a wonderfully strong work. The monochromatic palette makes us concentrate more on the form of the buildings and the landscape appreciating the light and shade. Black and white painters use the absence of colour to maximize impact. In the strictest sense, white is the absence of colour, but it is also true that black and white exist on the same spectrum. On the neutral grey colour spectrum, black and white are found on the extreme opposite ends intimating that restricting a painting’s colours to those of black and white, makes the painting monochromatic. So really, black and white can also exist as one, in harmony rather than always indicating a distinct difference. It has been used to great effect by some of the great masters including Guernica (1937) by Pablo Picasso, Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres’ magnificent painting Odalisque in Grisaille, the awe-inspiring painting Black Square by the Russian Avant-Garde artist Kazimir Malevich and even Horse’s Skull with White Rose (1931) by Georgia O’Keeffe.
