OLD TREE

About the Item

Fitzgerald, James (1899-1971) OLD TREE. Cat Raisonne 1223. Watercolor on paper, c. 1930. Signed, lower left. 19 x 25 1/2 inches, framed to 27 5/8 x 33 1/4 inches. Provenance: Estate of the artist to Anne M. & Edgar F. Hubert 1971, to a private Massachusetts colleciton. Fitzgerald was born in Boston. He served in the Marine COrp in 1918-1919, and then enrolled in art school. He also worked briefly as a commercial fisherman. In 1928, as a seaman, he worked his way to California, where he settled in Monterey, married and built a house and studio. In Monterey, he became part of the Cannery Row circle led by Edward Riketts, which included John Steinbeck, Krishnamurti, Robinson Jeffers, John Cage and Joseph Campbell, among others. Through his association with this group, Fitgerald became interested in Eastern philosophy; its priciples and aesthetic underlay his work in California and afterward. In Califonria he exhibited his work regularly, and was awarded prizes for his watercolors. Old Tree, dated to about 1930, was likely painted in California. In 1948, after having visited Monhegan Island in Maine for several years, he moved there permanently. He purchased the house which had been Rockwell Kent's studio when he lived on Monhegan. Fitzgerald liked to stand and watch the sea, the fishermen, the flying gulls of Monhegan, and use his observations to created his paintings and watercolors. Fitzgerald died while on a visit to Ireland in 1971.

PROVINCETOWN HOUSES
Located in Portland, ME
Cadmus, Egbert (American, 1868-1939). PROVINCETOWN HOUSES. Watercolor on heavy paper. Signed in watercolor, lower left. The scene depicts a dune with a group of houses beyond, and then, further away, the water. 18 x 22 1/8. inches (sheet). A small loss to the paper at the left edge, else in excellent condition. Egbert Cadmus is remembered as the father of Paul Cadmus, though he had a distinguished career in his own right. There is a portrait of Paul by Egbert dated 1926, and we've seen other Provincetown drawings dated 1927, so apparently the family summered there for several seasons. In 1931 Egbert Cadmus moved to Lyme Connecticut...

Claude Muncaster Shap Farmhouse Cumbria Watercolour England Britain art painting
By Claude Muncaster
Located in London, GB
We acquired a series of paintings from Claude Muncaster's studio. To find more scroll down to "More from this Seller" and below it click on "See all from this seller." Claude Muncaster (1903-1974) Shap Farmhouse Signed and inscribed to reverse Watercolour 19x29cm Muncaster's watercolours capture the English countryside feel with great competence. Here he records a farmhouse in the Market Town of Shap in Cumbria. This remote village has had a market charter since the seventeenth century so although small is officially a Market Town. Claude Grahame Muncaster, RWS, ROI, RBA, SMA was the son of Oliver Hall RA. At the age of fifteen his career as a landscape painter began, and he soon took to the seas, spending the 1920s and 30s travelling the world with his sketchbook in a series of vessels. With the outbreak of war and he joined the RNVR training as a navigator. Having left school at fifteen his mathematics was very weak and it was a relief for all when his artistic talents meant he was recruited as a camofleur. A master of capturing seascapes he was therefore able to hide huge ships ‘in plain sight’ with clever disguises. After the war he painted for the Royal Family and was a frequent guest at Sandringham. Claude Muncaster was a watercolourist known for his landscapes and maritime scenes. He was born Grahame Hall, the son of the Royal Academician Oliver Hall who taught his son to paint from an early age; Grahame first exhibited his work aged 15 and a few years later was showing at the RA. However, he adopted the name Claude Muncaster in 1922 to dissociate his career from that of his father. Muncaster’s primary choice of subject matter came from a genuine love of the sea. He made several long-distance sea voyages, including one around the Horn...
