About the Item

"Windmill on the Plains" is an original watercolor and ink on paper painting by acclaimed 20th-century Colorado artist Jenne Magafan (1916–1952). Created in the 1940s, this evocative piece captures the quiet strength and simplicity of rural life on the American Plains. A tall windmill stands proudly at center, surrounded by sheds, fencing, and the vast open landscape of Colorado farmland. Rendered in a delicate yet expressive style, the work highlights Magafan’s ability to merge natural realism with emotional depth, a hallmark of her best pieces. The composition radiates a sense of solitude, resilience, and connection to the land—hallmarks of the Midwestern and Western American experience. Framed dimensions: 24 ½ x 20 ½ inches Image size: 14 x 11 inches Frame: Custom archival frame, ready to hang Provenance: Estate of Ethel Magafan About the Artist: Jenne Magafan was a pioneering American muralist and painter, best known for her contributions to the WPA (Works Progress Administration) during the New Deal era. Born in Chicago in 1916 and raised in Colorado, Jenne and her twin sister Ethel Magafan were early protégés of modernist artist Frank Mechau. They trained at the Broadmoor Art Academy and quickly earned national acclaim for their mural work. Jenne Magafan received seven major mural commissions, including the notable Albion, Nebraska Post Office mural, and her paintings were exhibited at the Los Angeles Museum of Art, the National Academy of Design, and other leading institutions. A Fulbright Scholar, she traveled and painted in Italy and Greece, drawing inspiration from Mediterranean landscapes and history. Magafan’s work often explored themes of American identity, labor, and the land, blending regionalist realism with a modernist sensibility. Her promising career was tragically cut short when she passed away in 1952 at the age of 36. This original watercolor is a rare opportunity to acquire a work by one of Colorado’s most influential women artists, whose legacy remains vital to the story of 20th-century American art. Ideal for collectors of WPA-era art, female modernists, or Western American landscapes.
