About the Item

Impressionist Dutch watercolour on paper of a harbour scene, probably Rotterdam. by noted Dutch Impressionist painter Johan Hendrik van Mastenbroek. Signed J. H. Van Mastenbroek bottom right. This is possibly a preparatory sketch for one of his larger oil paintings. A charming and characteristic painting of a Dutch harbour scene. Mastenbroek was well known for capturing the life and animation of the port of Rotterdam. Steam tugs drawing barges filled with goods. In the background the cranes loading and unloading and in the foreground two figures of sailors loading goods on to a boat. A beautiful and evocative painting by a master of the genre. Johan Hendrik van Mastenbroek (Rotterdam, December 4, 1875 – Rotterdam, November 16, 1945) was a Dutch impressionist painter known for his captivating harbour scenes of Rotterdam and its surroundings. His diverse body of work also includes depictions of the Zuiderzee works in progress, hunting scenes, portraits, and serene polder landscapes. Van Mastenbroek’s artistic journey began under the influence of his father, who was a paint dealer, art seller, and painter. His preference lay in capturing work scenes and maritime themes. The development of Rotterdam’s harbour was a central theme in his art. Notably, a significant portion of his work related to the construction of the Zuiderzee works is housed in the Zuiderzee Museum in Enkhuizen. Despite his father’s encouragement to pursue a more stable career, Johan Hendrik Van Mastenbroek remained steadfast in his desire to become a painter. His works, particularly the harbour and cityscapes (primarily of Rotterdam), exhibit similarities to the style of Jacob Maris (1837–1899). His paintings are held in private collections and museums worldwide and have been the subject of several major retrospective exhibitions.
