About the Item

Paul-Emile Lecomte (1877-1950) Landscape by he river Signed lower right watercolor on paper 11.5 x 13.5 cm Framed : 23 x 29 cm Paul Emile Lecomte particularly excelled in small-format watercolours, with a particularly remarkable quality of detail. This can be seen in the finesse and detail of the little boat on the left and the bell tower in the distance. The theme of the river and the use of the tree as a counterpoint in the foreground place him in the tradition of the works of his uncle Paul Lecomte (1842-1920). An article written by a French art historian, devoted to Paul Emile Lecomte, gave an excellent account of Paul's decisive role in his nephew's career. He constantly encouraged him in his vocation as a painter and some very fine letters bear witness to this. This intimate bond between the two artists can also be seen in their works. The more modern development of the nephew's art also enabled Paul to free his touch, following his example and moving towards post-impressionism. What they have in common is a mastery of technique and instantly recognisable styles, as this small watercolour shows.

Edouard Dufeu (1836-1900) A Fantastic scene by a lake Charcoal on paper Signed lower right 23 x 30,5 cm Framed under glass : 42.5 x 51 cm This fantastic scene, the subject of which remains a mystery, reveals an aspect of Edouard Dufeu's personality in which he is more influenced by Romanticism. We can recognise his nervous, painterly style, which lends itself particularly well to this fantastic scene. Edouard Jacques Dufeu was born in Marseilles on 27 march 1836, and he died in Grasse on December 1 , 1900. He was a French painter and engraver . Coming from a family originally from Egypt, Dufeu moved to Paris in 1860 and frequented the studio of Charles Gleyre...
