About the Item
Paul Lecomte (1842-1920)
L'étang à Mortefontaine, an autumn landscape
signed lower left
Watercolor on paper,
29,3 x 22.5 cm
In its original vintage frame : 46 x 39,5 cm
titled on the reverse of the framing
As a lover of landscapes, Paul Lecomte seems to invite us to look at this autumnal pond landscape with the eyes of a watercolourist. As we know, the artist had a particular fondness for bodies of water, ponds, rivers, etc., and especially for the play of reflections that they offer.
But, and this is Paul Lecomte's particular talent, in addition to his technique and his unmistakable, identifiable watercolour style, it is the rigour of the composition that strikes us here again.
As we have seen in other works of his, but perhaps in a more assertive way, he composes his work by articulating the vertical of the trees on the left and the horizontal formed by the bank of the pond.
It is a simplicity and rigour that he undoubtedly drew from the lessons of the masters of Japanese printmaking, but which in many ways foreshadowed the modern art and abstraction of the following century.
Paul Lecomte was born in Paris on April 15, 1842. He was a painter of landscapes and coastal scenes.
He is considered as one of the last quality representatives from the Barbizon School.
He was the pupil of the painter Emile Lambinet (1813-1877) but the influence of Camille Corot and Henri Harpignies are the most noticeable in the developpement of his style.
His art is deeply influenced by japonism just as his almost exact contemporary Claude Monet.
He painted in Brittany, Normandy or South of France but also in England where he exhibited his works also.
He exhibited regularly at the Paris Salon from 1868 onward, winning different medals and awards.
He died in Paris on March 21, 1920.
Works by his hand are held by the Louvre Museum and the Musée du Petit Palais in Paris the Musée des Beaux Arts in Mulhouse and the Musée Baron-Martin in Gray.
