About the Item
Mal's (At Cliff Evan's Cabin), by Waldo Midgley. watercolor, 9 x 12 inches (Framed size: 18.5 x 21 inches), $1,500
Waldo Midgley (1888-1986) had a fruitful career spanning eight decades of insightful, intelligent and joyous creation that began in his native Utah during the early years of the 20th century.
In 1907 he left Utah for New York City where his work would be profoundly influenced by the emerging Ashcan school under the direction of Robert Henri. Henri’s philosophy of immersing oneself in the city and painting the raw material of urban America would remain a pervasive force throughout Midgley’s prolific life. Under Waldo Midgley’s creative genius, the subject matter of the Ashcan group - the city with its teeming inhabitants and ever-climbing skyscrapers, its moments of work and play - are rendered in an exuberant and joyous manner. He painted urban and rural scenes throughout the Northeastern and western United States, Canada and Europe.

"Approach to Lee's Ferry" by Kim Whitesides, oil on canvas, 18 X 22 inches (Framed size: 21.5 x 25.5 inches)
Whitesides made an impact in the art community at a very young age. While working as an illustrator in New York City from the late 60s through the mid 80s, his paintings appeared in many publications, including Time Magazine, Rolling Stone and Playboy. He received numerous awards from The Art Directors Club of New York and The Society of Illustrators. It was at this time that Whitesides began a period of bold work with the airbrush that emphasized the simplified spaces and clean lines of art deco and art moderne, for which he gained a national reputation.
A native Utahn, Whitesides believes art is a language and an opportunity for his vision to inspire others. He continues to grow as an artist, as his art is constantly opening doors on new vistas...

Earl Jones (1937- ) is one of Utah’s best known landscape artists. "For me, paint documents the state of things, how I feel and what is at the forefront in my thinking—maybe it’s like the soup of the day. I do not consider this process to be anything special in itself. The paintings record the daily random and absurd associations I make, which seem interesting to me after the fact. The Domestic paintings are a case in point. My wife and I have six children. Four have left home. Three are married. We are left with two children, both currently in middle school. We have about five years and they too will move out. This is on my mind. I am thinking about the layers of memories and it comes out as layers of paint. Feeling nostalgic, I think about all the noise and activity our home has absorbed. In turn, I found children’s large vinyl decals from Angry Birds...
