Conger Metcalf (1914–1998) was an American painter.
"He was born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa and died in Boston, Massachusetts. Metcalf began his art studies in 1932 at the Iowa Stone City Art Colony, headed by American Regionalist painter Grant Wood. Metcalf continued his studies at Coe College in Cedar Rapids with Stone City co-founder Marvin Cone. Metcalf graduated from Coe in 1936, then attended the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. He received an honorary doctorate degree from Coe in 1964. During his late twenties, and during his military service in World War II, Metcalf studied European master painters in Italy and France. This formal European influence affected his style, which differs from the earthy realism of his American Regionalist mentors. Metcalf was well-known and very active in the Boston, Massachusetts art community. Today, his works can be seen at the Café Pamplona in Cambridge, Massachusetts, Addison Gallery of American Art in Andover, Massachusetts, and at the Conger Metcalf Gallery at Coe College in Cedar Rapids."

"Conger Metcalf was born April 27, 1914 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. As a high school student he pursued both music and art. He spent two summers studying at Grant Wood’s Stone City Art Colony, attended Coe College, Cedar Rapids (1928-32), where he studied art under Marvin Cone. He Moved to Boston and continued his studies (drawing and painting) at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, under Alexandre Iacovleff and Karl Zerbe. It was during a trip[ to Mexico (1940) that he came up with the technique of layering thin washes of oil on clay-coated paper. 1956: Joined the Copley Society, Boston. 1956-72: Associate professor of Art, Boston University School of Fine and Applied Arts. 1975: Visiting Professor of Art, Emmanuel College, Boston, and Gordon College, Wenhem. He traveled frequently to Italy. Metcalf exhibited in many one-man and group shows throughout the country, in commercial and institutional galleries including the Hayden Gallery, M.I.T., Museum of Fine Arts, Boston and the Boston Athenaeum. Among the public collections in which his work is found are: Fogg Art Museum, Cambridge, MA; Boston Museum of Fine Arts; Dallas Museum of Fine Arts; Phoenix Art Museum, Phoenix, AZ; Coe College, Cedar Rapids IA; and DeCordova Museum, Lincoln MA. He died February 18, 1998."

Ray H. French: The Evolution of an Artistic Innovator
Printmaker, painter, and sculptor Ray H. French was born in Terre Haute, Indiana on May 16, 1919. Terre Haute was a cultural wasteland before the opening of the Sheldon Swope Art Museum in 1942. Thus, with a father as a coal miner and carpenter, art remained a luxury for Ray. Nevertheless, local art teachers Mabel Mikel Williams and Nola E. Williams helped to foster his creativity and unshakable drive to create things of beauty.
After high school, Ray attended the John Herron School of Art in Indianapolis. His studies there were interrupted by the outbreak of World War II, during which he developed surveillance photographs for the Army Air Force. After the war, Ray transferred to the University of Iowa on the G.I. Bill, where he received both his BFA and MFA degrees. The University of Iowa during the 1940s was a cultural mecca with many major art historians and artists.
