About the Item

This accomplished watercolours is a fine copy of John Downman's portrait of Sarah Siddons. Painted in the early 19th century, watercolours was a contemporary study of Downman's work. The original watercolours was commissioned by the 3rd Duke of Richmond to add to his collection of portraits of contemporary 'beauties' of the time. Sarah Siddons was a Welsh actress who shot to fame after her renowned performance of Lady Macbeth at Bath Theatre Royal. She was an actress in high demand in the Georgian era and the most accomplished artists of the time all completed portraits of her; including Joshua Reynolds, Gainsborough and Lawrence. The original study by Downman which is now in the National Portrait Gallery, was one of several studies that the artist made of Siddons. An engraving of the original portrait was made in 1797 by P. W. Tomkins and published in 1901. This fine study appears to be after the engraving due to its vast colour difference from the original painting.Signed and dated with John Downman's signature to the lower left. Beautifully presented in a glazed Hogarth style frame. On paper.
