The Noble Bull
By William Robinson Leigh
Located in Missouri, MO
William Robinson Leigh "The Noble Bull" Watercolor on Paper Signed Lower Left Site Size: 20 x 15 inches Framed Size: approx. 33.5 inches x 27 inches Born near Falling Waters, West Virginia on a plantation a year after the Civil War, and raised in Baltimore, William Leigh became one of the foremost painters of the American West with a career of seventy-five years. Some people referred to him as the "Sagebrush Rembrandt". He was the son of impoverished Southern aristocrats and took his first art training at age 14 from Hugh Newell (1830-1915) at the Maryland Institute where he was regarded as one of the best students in his class. From 1883 to 1895, he studied in Europe, mainly at the Royal Academy in Munich with Ludwig Loefftz. From 1891 to 1896, he painted six cycloramas or murals in the round, a giant German panorama. In 1896, he began working as a magazine illustrator in New York City for Scribner's and Collier's Weekly Magazine, and he also painted portraits, landscapes, and genre scenes. However, he was not a very successful artist in those years in New York. Trips to the Southwest began in 1906 when he made an agreement with William Simpson, Santa Fe Railway advertising manager, to paint the Grand Canyon in exchange for free transportation West. In 1907, he completed his Grand Canyon painting...

His work is noted for its historical subject matter, portraits of Italian noble families as well as genre paintings and local scenes, especially work with Oriental themes. He received his early art education at the Academia de San Luca where he was the pupil of Pietro Gabarini and Cesare Maccari.[1] He exhibited in various exhibitions; including: The International Exhibition of 1888 in Munich and the World Fair of 1893 in Chicago, but his Oriental works were rarely included in these early exhibitions. Having his workshop at 48 Via Margutta in Rome, Aureli was in a position to exchange ideas with the most prolific Orientalist artists at that the time. He used the same staircase that led to a rabbit-warren of studios including those of Filippo Bartolini, Enrico Tarenghi...

"THUNDER ROLL", watercolor, glass, kitchen, travel, memory, identity, home, love
By Fleur Thesmar
Located in Toronto, Ontario
THUNDER ROLL is a watercolor on Arches paper by Fleur Thesmar. The artwork measures 22x30". It is professionally framed in white, with UV protection and anti-glare glass. Framed it measures 26x34". A recurring subject for the artist, a world traveller, is memory and landscape, possessions and identity. In "Thunder Roll" we see cherished wine glasses in a carton being packed or unpacked, either way in a state of transition. The play of light on the glass and on the wrapping paper suggests sunny days and warm moments. And the presence of the leaves adds a natural, wholesome energy to this home. From Fleur Thesmar – "The painting "Thunder Roll" is part of a body of work called “Removal” which features semi-realistic still lives of clothes, bubble wrap and sometimes cardboard and glasses. It questions themes such as possession and identity, removal and travel, memories and storage. It also resonates with landscapes and here, with the summer fields in France before the storm. I store memories of large tables, wine glasses and lace napkins...
