Little Garden Flowers, 20th Century Still Life Interior Watercolor Painting
By Elisabeth Spalding
Located in Denver, CO

Presented in a custom gold frame with archival materials, outer dimensions measure 28 ¼ x 25 ⅜ x 1 ⅛ inches. Image size is 16 ⅛ x 13 ¼ inches. Painting is clean and in very good vintage condition - please contact us for a complete condition report. About the Artist: In 1874, at the age of six, Elizabeth Spalding and her family settled in Denver where her father, the Reverend John F. Spalding, became an early-day bishop in the Colorado Diocese of the Episcopal Church. After graduating from Wolfe Hall, a female academy in Denver where she later taught, she went to New York in 1890 to study drawing at a private school and painting at Cooper Union with J. Alden Weir. Later in the decade, she returned to New York to study at the Art Students League with Childe Hassam, Kenyon Cox and John Twachtman, and did outdoor sketching with Leonard Ochtman. She also spent summers working with a number of eminent American artists: Arthur Wesley Dow at Ipswich, Massachusetts; John F. Carlson at Woodstock, New York (later the first landscape painting instructor at the newly-founded Broadmoor Art Academy in Colorado Springs,1920-22); Charles H. Woodbury at Ogunquit, Maine; and Henry McCarter at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts classes in Chester Springs, Pennsylvania. She also studied in France and England and lived briefly in Washington, DC. Spending the major portion of her career In Denver, she became a founding member of several local important art organizations. The first was the Le Brun Art Club, the city’s initial all-female artist group formed in 1890 and named after the renowned eighteenth-century French artist, Élisabeth Louise Vigée Le Brun. In 1893, Spalding and several other Le Brun Club members (Henrietta Bromwell, Emma Richardson Cherry...

Expressionist Ink, Pastel, Crayon Drawing Jewish American Modernist Ben Zion WPA
Located in Surfside, FL
Expressionist ink and pastel crayon drawing of beans (carobs, flowers?) in pods Hand signed. Born in 1897, Ben-Zion Weinman celebrated his European Jewish heritage in his visual works as a sculptor, painter, and printmaker. Influenced by Spinoza, Knut Hamsun, and Wladyslaw Reymont, as well as Hebrew literature, Ben-Zion wrote poetry and essays that, like his visual work, attempt to reveal the deep “connection between man and the divine, and between man and earth.” An emigrant from the Ukraine, he came to the US in 1920. He wrote fairy tales and poems in Hebrew under the name Benzion Weinman, but when he began painting he dropped his last name and hyphenated his first, saying an artist needed only one name. Ben-Zion was a founding member of “The Ten: An Independent Group” The Ten” a 1930’s avant-garde group, Painted on anything handy. Ben-Zion often used cabinet doors (panels) in his work. Other members of group included Ilya Bolotowsky, Lee Gatch, Adolph Gottlieb, Louis Harris, Yankel Kufeld, Marcus Rothkowitz (later known as Mark Rothko), Louis Schanker, and Joseph Solman. The Art of “The Ten” was generally described as expressionist, as this style offered the best link between modernism and social art. Their exhibition at the Mercury Gallery in New York held at the same time as the Whitney Annual Exhibition of Contemporary American Painting, included a manifesto concentrating on aesthetic questions and criticisms of the conservative definition of modern art imposed by the Whitney. Ben-Zion’s work was quickly noticed. The New York Sun said he painted “furiously” and called him “the farthest along of the lot.” And the triptych, “The Glory of War,” was described by Art News as “resounding.” By 1939, The Ten disbanded because most of the members found individual galleries to represent their work. Ben-Zion had his first one-man show at the Artist’s Gallery in Greenwich Village and J.B. Neumann, the highly esteemed European art dealer who introduced Paul Klee, (among others) to America, purchased several of Ben-Zion’s drawings. Curt Valentin, another well-known dealer, exhibited groups of his drawings and undertook the printing of four portfolios of etchings, each composed of Ben-Zion’s biblical themes. He worked as a WPA artist. Ben-Zion’s work is represented in many museums throughout the country including the Metropolitan, the Whitney, and the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Philadelphia Museum of Art and the Phillips Collection, Washington. The Jewish Museum in New York opened in 1948 with a Ben-Zion exhibition. Ben-Zion consistently threaded certain subject matter—nature, still life, the human figure, the Hebrew Bible, and the Jewish people—into his work throughout his life. "In all his work a profound human feeling remains. Sea and sky, even sheaves of wheat acquire a monolithic beauty and simplicity which delineates the transient as a reflection of the eternal. This sensitive inter- mingling of the physical and metaphysical is one of the most enduring features of Ben-Zion's works." (Excerpt from Stephen Kayser, “Biblical Paintings,” The Jewish Museum Catalogue, 1952). Mystical Imprints: Marc Chagall, Ben-Zion, and Ben Shahn presents the print work of three prominent 20th century Jewish artists born in the Russian Empire. Among these seventy pieces are etchings and lithographs from Chagall’s Bible series...

'Cherries in the Sunshine', Aegean, Hydra, Greece, National Watercolor Society
Located in Santa Cruz, CA
Signed lower right, 'E. Brigeois' for Evelyne Brigeois (French, 1946-2016) and dated 19868; additionally titled, verso, 'Hydra, the Cherries'. A view of a townhouse window on the Greek island of Hydra showing a sunlit row of jars filled with freshly preserved cherries basking in the Aegean sun. Born in Troyes, France in 1946, Evelyne Brigeois grew up in the town of Nimes, east of Paris. She subsequently lived and painted in Germany, England and Spain before moving to the United States in her late twenties. Settling in Idaho, she began a forty-year career as a fine artist, exhibiting widely and with success including, regularly, at both Boise's Art in the Park and Art and Roses Festival. Evelyne Brigeois was also the recipient of numerous national and international awards including from the National Watercolor Society, the Detroit Institute of Arts, the Michigan Watercolor Society, The Salem Academy Fine Arts Center and the Louisiana Watercolor Society among others. Her work was frequently featured in national publications including 'U.S. Art' and 'American Artist'. Her style combines a precise and delicate realism with a close observation of light- often with with strongly contrasting shadow. Her talent for serene and lyrical composition distinguishes her landscapes and townscapes of her favorite subjects, the Greek Islands, Venice and rural France. We are pleased to offer this intimate view of a sunlit window on the island of Hydra in the Greek Aegean.

"Untitled (Red Flower)" Watercolor on Paper, Abstract Flower, Signed & Dated
Located in Detroit, MI
Flowers were one of Culver's favorite subject. This stunning portrait of a red flower draws the viewer into its very center as powerfully as any flower portrait by Georgia O'Keeffe. It is the idyllic flower that can be described as in the romantic style wherein the subject depicted is a more desired or dramatic version of what actually is. It is signed and dated by the artist on the lower left. This piece has been professionally reframed with acid-free matting and museum glass. In a 1952 Detroit Free Press article, entitled “Artist Explains His Work,” Culver was asked why he painted the way he did. He stated: “I try to ‘see’ though not too exactly; I try to think though not too ponderously; I feel emotion yet I try not to become overwrought. I interpret rather than describe, and design rather than depict. I work with values, not light and shade; hence, when I am successful, I achieve substance rather than three-dimensional form, and this satisfies me as being wholly sufficient. In my work I wish to be serious without becoming a bore, exuberant without being frivolous, humorous without being silly. I believe that good paintings are conceived, not contrived; and I am interested in art much more than in pictures.” Charles Culver...
