About the Item
Xavier Gonzalez was born in Almeria, Spain, and lived in Argentina and Mexico before emigrating to the United States in 1925. He was known for expressive murals and for theatrical, cubism-influenced landscapes and cityscapes. Gonzalez was close friends with Pablo Picasso and it was reported he repaired Geurnica for Picasso when it arrived at the MOMA damaged. His works have been exhibited at the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and elsewhere. He was a very accomplished muralist with work throughout the U.S.
This painterly small floral is distinctive for its bold use of reflection to distinguish background from surface, and for the highly mannered gestures of the laid roses.
