Contemporary Drawings and Watercolor Paintings

CONTEMPORARY STYLE

Used to refer to a time rather than an aesthetic, Contemporary art generally describes pieces created after 1970 or being made by living artists anywhere in the world. This immediacy means it encompasses art responding to the present moment through diverse subjects, media and themes. Contemporary painting, sculpture, photography, performance, digital art, video and more frequently includes work that is attempting to reshape current ideas about what art can be, from Felix Gonzalez-Torres’s use of candy to memorialize a lover he lost to AIDS-related complications to Jenny Holzer’s ongoing “Truisms,” a Conceptual series that sees provocative messages printed on billboards, T-shirts, benches and other public places that exist outside of formal exhibitions and the conventional “white cube” of galleries.

Contemporary art has been pushing the boundaries of creative expression for years. Its disruption of the traditional concepts of art are often aiming to engage viewers in complex questions about identity, society and culture. In the latter part of the 20th century, contemporary movements included Land art, in which artists like Robert Smithson and Michael Heizer create large-scale, site-specific sculptures, installations and other works in soil and bodies of water; Sound art, with artists such as Christian Marclay and Susan Philipsz centering art on sonic experiences; and New Media art, in which mass media and digital culture inform the work of artists such as Nam June Paik and Rafaël Rozendaal.

The first decades of the 21st century have seen the growth of Contemporary African art, the revival of figurative painting, the emergence of street art and the rise of NFTs, unique digital artworks that are powered by blockchain technology.

Major Contemporary artists practicing now include Ai Weiwei, Cecily Brown, David Hockney, Yayoi Kusama, Jeff Koons, Takashi Murakami and Kara Walker.

Solitude - original large art Blue Nude by Paula Craioveanu 39x27.5in
Located in Forest Hills, NY
"Solitude", pencil and ultramarine tempera on paper, inspired by Matisse. Part of Nude in Interior series. Large drawing. Shipped rolled in a tube, directly from Florida, US. 39x27.5in / 100x70cm Artist Statement "I started by painting interiors, being interested in space and perspective through my studies. These scenes evolved, when I added the human figure. I focused more on the human figure and its relation to the background. The human figure is more present than ever in my paintings now. As a woman artist I’ve been preoccupied with the female form and its imagery. One of my goals was to capture the solitary moments and the nude’s relation to the surrounding space. My interest turned from depicting the space to rendering the atmosphere and the scene as a whole, the feeling a woman adds to the environment: warmth, desire, joy, a feeling of power and control, or the opposite – sadness, despair. Here is a collection of figurative paintings, exploring the nudes in interior spaces, seeing the nudes from my perspective, as a woman artist, considering the physical and spiritual realities of a woman’s body, in a new level of intimacy. My paintings are the opposite of objectifying a woman’s or a man’s anatomy. Painted works, featuring female nudes and a also men nudes, in a reversal of the male-artist/female-muse pattern, validate the feminine experience, defining myself through it. I was interested in how one experiences the body in a sensual form, and later focused on my own body, as I experience it myself, looking into the mirror and reconnecting. My work challenges the tradition of the nude by capturing my point of view, the gaze of a female painter, by using photography, drawings, sketches, and painting on canvas, for, both physical and psychological exploration. My art tries to create a visual language for emotion, beauty, feelings of intimacy and in the same time autonomy, captured with paint and vivid colors. My intense interest in color and the gestures of the brush strokes are the means I see and convey the subjects in space, as living, passionate beings." Paula Craioveanu

'Pink Palms, Rainforest Beach', Hawaiian Landscape
Located in Santa Cruz, CA
Signed lower right, 'Tremewen' for Ian Tremewen (Australian, born 1954), additionally signed, verso, dated 1993 and titled, 'Poster Idea, #9328, Pink Palms, Rainforest Beach' A watercolor and gouache study for a gallery exhibition at the Village Gallery, Lahaina, Maui, Hawaii. Ian Tremewen began showing his watercolors with Village Gallery in 1976 while living on Maui. Born in Montreal and now based in Australia, Tremewen has spent much of his life in the Caribbean and Hawaiian tropics. Tremewen's work reflects the interest he feels for light, space and shadow working in sculpture, contemporary glass and textiles. His abstract interpretation of the amorphic shapes of nature, coupled with his design and composition enable him to present his work with a view that is distinctly his own. Artist's Statement: "As an artist, I can experiment with many aspects and combinations. I've always been fascinated by the psychedelic colours hidden in rainforests. For me, these elements invite abstraction, where a shape, along with colour and texture, defines an object. There now appears to be a refreshing openness emerging in the art world. I feel there is a freedom to stretch and explore ideas and alternatives like never before using mediums and concepts that are expanding the world of art and design.” Solo Exhibitions: Napua Gallery, USA Village Gallery Contemporary, USA Karratha Art Centre, Australia Metro Arts, Australia Gold Coast City Art Gallery, Australia Grand Orbit, Australia Paperworks Gallery, Canada Corporate Art West, USA Budds Beach Gallery, Australia Pandanus Art, Australia Tremewen@Marine, Australia Group Exhibitions: S.H. About the piece: - Pairs well with 'Roller Skate' - Single white mat 14H X 18W Words that describe this piece:color, yupo, primary, action, abstract, dynamic Artist Biography: Mark A. Lembo Script M Abstract Art Mark’s dynamic work blurs the distinction between alcohol ink and watercolor - working with dyes, inks, liquid acrylic, liquid watercolor, and other aqueous media; lately, he has been incorporating metallic watercolor and pearlescent ink to his work. He has used canvas, synthetic Yupo™ paper, Yasutomo Mineral Paper, and various watercolor papers. Mark’s journey into the world of creative arts started with the question, “What would Jackson Pollock’s work look like if he had used transparent watercolors?” So, it was out with the pencils, pens, and brushes, and on to the pouring of various aqueous solutions. While mostly self-taught, Mark took a series of classes at the Creative Arts Group, Sierra Madre, CA, under Joe Stoddard, as well as seminars with Robert Burridge...
