A charming original watercolour painting by the 20th-century French Impressionist artist, Maurice Mazeilie. This painting looks out from the top of a bridge down into a small rural village surrounded by forest. The artist’s characteristic brushwork and vivid colour palette bring life and energy to the scene.
Maurice Mazeilie (French, 1924 - 2021):
Mazeilie lived and worked in Montmartre, where he had a studio on the famous Place du Tertre. Place du Tertre, located just a stone’s throw away from the Basilica of Sacré-Cœur, is known for its vibrant community of artists and is considered one of the key locations in Montmartre's artistic history. Since the late 19th century, Montmartre has been a haven for artists, housing greats like Picasso and Modigliani, and providing inspiration with its scenic streets and bustling cafés.
Place du Tertre and Montmartre Art Scene:
Historical Significance: Place du Tertre became known as an artist's hub during the Belle Époque era, with painters such as Toulouse-Lautrec, Renoir, and Degas frequenting the area. By the 20th century, it became synonymous with art and creativity.
Artist Colony: The square remains one of the few places in Paris where artists can publicly display and sell their works directly to tourists and collectors, keeping the artistic tradition alive.
