About the Item

William Calcott Knell 1830-1880, was a British painter of maritime subjects. His father was William Adolphus Knell 1801-1875 who was also a maritime painter and he influenced his son on subject , manner and identity of his works, both painters displayed a general motif of small detailed works. Both father and son exhibited at the Royal Academy, the Society of British Artists and the British Institution. William Calcott Knell as his father painted maritime pictures at different times of the day to show the prevailing weather around the English coastline. This picture relates to the Battle of Trafalgar and shows a man of war in action, I believe it may have been influenced by his father's tales of the Battle, the times of which he lived through and as William Adolphus Knell died in 1875 therefore this picture may have been painted as a remembrance picture for personal grounds and the means of motivation for the work. The picture is in original condition and has been deliberately left as such I believe as a tribute to the son's love of his father.
