Miromesnil Fine Art, Paris - 1988
Henri Lebasque studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Angers, then, after moving to Paris in 1886, studied briefly under Bonnat, then under Humbert, whom he assisted in the decoration of the Panthéon. More importantly, he met and learned from Pissarro.
In 1893 he met Luce and Signac at the Salon des Indépendants, and as a result he adopted Pointillism for a few years. In the 1900s he lived in Lagny with his family and painted landscapes of the neighbouring Marne forest. His painting underwent drastic changes when he discovered the south of the country. He would thereafter live in other French regions: Vendée, Brittany and Normandy, where he stayed at Les Andelys for some time, but his home from home was between Sanary and Nice.
He painted members of his family in the settings in which he lived, mostly in Provence. His work shares some themes of his friend Bonnard. But although he exhibited with the Fauves, and admired Matisse, Rouault, Dufy, Valtat and Manguin (who introduced him to the Midi), he remained distinct from them in style. Lebasque was well known in his lifetime. He collaborated on the decorations of the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées and of the Atlantic liner Paris. He is remembered for: Nymphs at their Bath; The Sunshade; Girl with Hydrangeas; Great Nude on a Pink Sofa.
He took part in the following collective exhibitions: Salon des Indépendants, 1886; Salon des Artistes Français; and later the Salon d'Automne, of which he was a founding member in 1903 and on whose committee he sat until his death. A set of his works was shown in 1937 at Masters of Independent Art ( Maîtres de l'Art Indépendant) at the Petit Palais. In 1957, 20 years after his death, a retrospective exhibition was held at the Musée des Ponchettes in Nice, and in 1981 his works were exhibited at St-Paul-de-Vence.

New York, The Macbeth Gallery, Paintings of Glacier National Park by Charles Warren Eaton, December 13, 1921 - January 2, 1922, no. 2.
Literature:
"Two Exhibitions at Macbeth's," American Art News, New York, Vol. XX, No. 10, December 17, 1921.
A contemporary critic wrote that the paintings of Charles Warren Eaton appeal to “the dreamers who find in them the undiscovered scenes in which their fancy long has dwelt.” Eaton’s contemplative landscapes exude a spiritual quality that moves the observer into a similar frame of mind. He loved to depict the ethereal light of dawn and dusk in late autumn or winter, usually without any reference to human or animal figures or buildings. These Tonalist paintings, with their subdued palette and relatively intimate scale, marked a definite break with the fading popularity of the panoramic and romantic views of the Hudson River School painters.
Charles Warren Eaton was born in Albany, New York to a family of limited means. He began painting while working in a dry-goods store. At age 22, he enrolled at the National Academy of Design in New York City and then studied figure painting at the Art Students League. By 1886, he was successful enough to quit his day job and make a living as a landscape painter. That year, he traveled to Europe with fellow Tonalist painters Leonard Ochtman and Ben Foster. In France, Eaton visited popular artist’s spots such as Paris, Fontainebleau and Grez-sur-Loing, and fell in love with the loose brushwork and moody style of French Barbizon painting.
Returning to the United States, Eaton fell under the spell of George Inness, the foremost exponent of Barbizon style in the United States. In 1888, Eaton settled near Inness in Bloomfield, New Jersey, where Eaton lived until his death in 1937. In this period, he painted shadowy and ambiguous landscapes inspired by rural scenery in the northeastern United States. His signature theme was a cropped view of the branches, trunks, and foliage of a pine grove silhouetted against a delicately illuminated sunset or moonlit sky. He painted this vision so often between 1900 and 1910 that he picked up the sobriquet ‘‘The Pine Tree Painter.”
After 1910, Eaton responded to the popularity of Impressionism by using brighter colors and painting sunlit daytime scenes. In 1921, he was hired to paint Glacier Lake, in Glacier National Park by the Great Northern Railroad Company as part of their ‘See America First’ campaign. He produced more than 20 paintings, among the artist's last works, that now poignantly remind viewers of the vast disappearing glaciers. Eaton tended to approach this mountain scenery from an oblique vantage point; he liked to capture small episodes, showing mountaintops nearly obscured by dramatically attenuated screens of fir trees.
Eaton, like many Tonalist artists of his generation such as Henry Ward Ranger, John Francis Murphy, and Charles Melville Dewey...

Early 20th Century American Impressionism -- Old Lyme New England Farm
Located in Soquel, CA
Gorgeous early 20th Century American Impressionist landscape of New England Farm by George M. Bruestle (American, 1871 - 1939), Circa 1914. Signed lower left and on verso. Presented in gilt-toned wood frame. Image size: 8"H x 10"W.
George Matthew Bruestle is an American Realist/Impressionist painter known for his intimate landscapes. Born and raised in New York City, Bruestle studied at the Art Students' League of New York in 1886 at the young age of fifteen and later in Paris. That same year, Bruestle visited Essex, CT and eventually purchased a second home in Hadlyme, Old Lyme as the Art Colony formed. Bruestle's main studio was in New York City.
Inspired by Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot [1796-1875] and other French landscape painters, Bruestle's style was a mix of Early Realism and Early Impressionist techniques. He was an adept draftsman and his paintings favored earlier European examples but, later took on a brighter Impressionist palette and brushy quality of the Old Lyme Art...

Morris Kantor (Belarusian: Морыс Кантор) (1896-1974) was a Russian Empire-born American painter based in the New York City area.
Born in Minsk on April 15, 1896, Kantor was brought to the United States in 1906 at age 10, in order to join his father who had previously relocated to the states. He made his home in West Nyack, New York for much of his life, and died there in 1974. He produced a prolific and diverse body of work, much of it in the form of paintings, which is distinguished by its stylistic variety over his long career. Perhaps his most widely recognized work is the iconic painting "Baseball At Night", which depicts an early night baseball game played under artificial electric light. Although he is best known for his paintings executed in a realistic manner, over the course of his life he also spent time working in styles such as Cubism and Futurism, and produced a number of abstract or non-figural works. A famous cubist, Futurist, painting of his "Orchestra" brought over 500,000$ at Christie's auction house in 2018
Kantor found employment in the Garment District upon his arrival in New York City, and was not able to begin formal art studies until 1916, when he began courses at the now-defunct Independent School of Art. He studied landscape painting with Homer Boss (1882-1956). In 1928, after returning to New York City from a year in Paris, Kantor developed a style in which he combined Realism with Fantasy, often taking the streets of New York as his subject matter. He did some moody Surrealist Nude paintings and fantasy scenes. In the 1940's he turned towards figural studies. Later in his career, Kantor himself was an instructor at the Cooper Union and also at the Art Students League of New York in the 1940s, and taught many pupils who later became famous artists in their own right, such as Knox Martin, Robert Rauschenberg, Sigmund Abeles and Susan Weil...

Emile Gruppe was an unusually prolific artist. He was at his easel almost every day and created thousands of paintings over a career that lasted 60 years. At his peak, he was completing almost 200 oil paintings a year. Yet he has never failed to find an audience for his depictions of New England in autumn and winter, or his harbor scenes of Rockport and Gloucester in Massachusetts.
Gruppe was born in 1896 in Rochester, New York to an artistic family--his father, brother, sister and nephew were all artists. Emile spent his youth in Katwyk an Zee, a fishing village in Holland, where his father, Charles Gruppe, worked as both an artist and an art dealer. Emile lived in the Netherlands until he was 17, when the family returned permanently to the United States to avoid World War I.
In New York City, Gruppe attended classes at the National Academy of Design and at the Art Students League, where he studied under Charles Chapman and George Bridgman. He also studied with John Carlson in Woodstock, New York, where he gained an appreciation for outdoor painting. Carlson “turned me into a painter,” he later said.
Gruppe helped found the Rockport Art Association in 1921, but he is most closely linked to Gloucester where he lived from about 1940 until his death. He operated the Gloucester School of Painting from the 1940s into the 1970s and helped turn the Rocky Neck area of East Gloucester into a world-famous art colony. The school boasted an impressive faculty but Gruppe’s own exuberant plein-air demonstrations were often the highlight of the week.
Gloucester, with its fleet of whimsically painted fishing vessels, crowded wharf buildings and shacks, and picturesque inhabitants, never ceased to fascinate Gruppe. He also helped popularize Rockport’s famous fishing shack known as Motif #1, sometimes called “the most often-painted building in America.”
By the 1940s, Gruppe was one of the most prominent of the Cape Ann artists...
