Fleurs au pot de gres rose - Fauvist Still Life Oil Painting by Charles Camoin
Located in Marlow, Buckinghamshire
Signed still life oil on canvas by French expressionist and fauvist painter Charles Camoin. The work depicts a bright bouquet of flowers in reds, yellows, blues and pinks in a stoneware vase. Signature: Signed lower right Dimensions: Framed: 36"x28" Unframed: 29"x21" Provenance: Galerie Marcel Bernheim Exhibitied: Paris, Galerie Druet, March 1929, n°23 This work is included in the Archives Camoin and a certificate from Madame Grammont-Camoin is available on request Charles Camoin was the son of a paint manufacturer in Marseilles who died when Charles was six years old. His mother travelled extensively, absenting herself for long periods at a time, and Camoin's studies suffered accordingly. At 16, he enrolled at a commercial college in Marseilles, but also attended courses at the École des Beaux-Arts, where he was awarded a first prize for drawing and composition. In 1896, at the age of 17 (or in 1898 according to other, possibly more reliable sources), Camoin moved to Paris where he was admitted to Gustave Moreau's class at the École des Beaux-Arts, shortly before the latter's death. He soon left on his travels in the company of Albert Marquet - no doubt following Moreau's advice to 'go and paint buses', his recommendation to the two artists to search out their subject matter on the streets and in the cabarets of Paris. During his short time in Moreau's class Camoin made a number of lasting friendships, notably with artists who would go on to pioneer Fauvism: Henry Manguin, Georges Roualt and, in particular, Jean Puy and Henri Matisse, with whom he exchanged letters on a regular basis. In 1900, Camoin did his military service, first in Arles, where he painted compositions inspired by Van Gogh motifs, then in 1902 in Aix, where he frequently met with Cézanne, with whom Camoin maintained a life-long correspondence and whose advice and counsel he cited repeatedly. In 1903, Camoin exhibited for the first time - at the Salon des Artistes Indépendants in Paris. The following year (1905), he met Claude Monet (at Cézanne's instigation and, appropriately perhaps, underneath Giverny's Nympheas); he then held his first solo exhibition at the Berthe Weill Gallery in Paris. In 1905, Camoin exhibited alongside the 'Animals' at that year's Salon d'Automne, although it must be said that he did not share the graphic and chromatic violence of a Matisse or a Derain...

Henri Pailler - Snow in Triel sur Seine
Located in BELEYMAS, FR
Henri PAILLER (Poitiers 1876 - Triel-sur-Seine 1954) Snow in Triel sur Seine Oil on canvas H. 54 cm; L. 73 cm Signed lower left Provenance: Private collection, Vienne A native of Poitiers in Vienne, Henri Pailler shows serious drawing skills. Noticed by Edmond Petitjean, the young man was sent to Paris to complete his training at the Beaux-Arts under the aegis of the great Léon Bonnat. First of all accustomed to a style and a very academic palette, the young painter quickly branched off from this classical art which he hardly liked. From the beginning of the century he moved towards Impressionism which he deployed within the Crozant school thanks to his meeting with Armand Guillaumin who took him to paint on the motif in 1901. Residing in Poitiers until the At the dawn of the great conflict of 1914, Pailler sent to the Salon many landscapes of the Creuse where the liveliness of colors was more and more felt. It is precisely following the meeting with Dufy and Marquet that a fawn side appears in his compositions, but after a few years he instinctively returns to his love for impressionism by keeping a generous amount of hues on his palette. On his return from the war, Henri Pailler joined Roubaix where he was appointed workshop professor at the School of Industrial Arts. On his retirement he will settle on the banks of the Seine in Triel-sur-Seine, of which he will realize many views with the talent and the colors so appreciated by this painter considered to be one of the greats of Crozant. Throughout his career, Pailler will travel through France and regularly in Périgord, from which he will bring back many works by Bourdeilles mainly but also Brantôme. From the 1920s, the painter will present views of Triel-sur-Seine in the Yvelines in various salons. This town, whose church with its distinctive silhouette will be the playground for Pailler's easel until his death. Our painting undoubtedly made in the 1920s is a striking winter image...

Cows by Woodland Pond, Toledo, Ohio, Early 20th Century Cleveland School
Located in Beachwood, OH
Frank Nelson Wilcox (American, 1887-1964) Cows by Woodland Pond, Toledo, Ohio, c. 1920 Watercolor and graphite on board Signed lower right 22 x 30 inches Frank Nelson Wilcox (October 3, 1887 – April 17, 1964) was a modernist American artist and a master of watercolor. Wilcox is described as the "Dean of Cleveland School painters," though some sources give this appellation to Henry Keller or Frederick Gottwald. Wilcox was born on October 3, 1887 to Frank Nelson Wilcox, Sr. and Jessie Fremont Snow Wilcox at 61 Linwood Street in Cleveland, Ohio. His father, a prominent lawyer, died at home in 1904 shortly before Wilcox' 17th birthday. His brother, lawyer and publisher Owen N. Wilcox, was president of the Gates Legal Publishing Company or The Gates Press. His sister Ruth Wilcox was a respected librarian. In 1906 Wilcox enrolled from the Cleveland School of Art under the tutelage of Henry Keller, Louis Rorimer, and Frederick Gottwald. He also attended Keller's Berlin Heights summer school from 1909. After graduating in 1910, Wilcox traveled and studied in Europe, sometimes dropping by Académie Colarossi in the evening to sketch the model or the other students at their easels, where he was influenced by French impressionism. Wilcox was influenced by Keller's innovative watercolor techniques, and from 1910 to 1916 they experimented together with impressionism and post-impressionism. Wilcox soon developed his own signature style in the American Scene or Regionalist tradition of the early 20th century. He joined the Cleveland School of Art faculty in 1913. Among his students were Lawrence Edwin Blazey, Carl Gaertner, Paul Travis, and Charles E. Burchfield. Around this time Wilcox became associated with Cowan Pottery. In 1916 Wilcox married fellow artist Florence Bard, and they spent most of their honeymoon painting in Berlin Heights with Keller. They had one daughter, Mary. In 1918 he joined the Cleveland Society of Artists, a conservative counter to the Bohemian Kokoon Arts Club, and would later serve as its president. He also began teaching night school at the John Huntington Polytechnic Institute at this time, and taught briefly at Baldwin-Wallace College. Wilcox wrote and illustrated Ohio Indian Trails in 1933, which was favorably reviewed by the New York Times in 1934. This book was edited and reprinted in 1970 by William A. McGill. McGill also edited and reprinted Wilcox' Canals of the Old Northwest in 1969. Wilcox also wrote, illustrated, and published Weather Wisdom in 1949, a limited edition (50 copies) of twenty-four serigraphs (silk screen prints) accompanied by commentary "based upon familiar weather observations commonly made by people living in the country." Wilcox displayed over 250 works at Cleveland's annual May Show. He received numerous awards, including the Penton Medal for as The Omnibus, Paris (1920), Fish Tug on Lake Erie (1921), Blacksmith Shop (1922), and The Gravel Pit (1922). Other paintings include The Trailing Fog (1929), Under the Big Top (1930), and Ohio Landscape...

Watercolor Painting by William Zorach, Titled "Redwoods, Yosemite Valley", 1920
Located in New York, NY
William Zorach, 1887-1966 Redwoods, Yosemite Valley, 1920 Watercolor and pencil 15 ¾ x 13 ⅜ inches Signed (at lower right): William Zorach WZorach-7 Provenance: Estate of William Zorach Exhibited: William Zorach, 1887-1996, Sculpture, Drawings and Watercolors, Zabriskie Gallery, New York; Feb. 10 – March 14, 1998. William Zorach was born in Lithuania in 1889, and immigrated to the United States with his family in 1893. Settling in Cleveland with his parents, he worked as a lithographer from 1902- 1908, making enough money to study painting with Henry G. Keller at the School of Art. In 1910, Zorach traveled to Paris to study in La Palette, where he was encouraged to develop his own unique style rather than adhere to traditional teachings. Zorach once said, “I began to be conscious of the various modern influences that were invading the art world…I was disturbed and confused, and yet I felt that I was a very young man entering a new age. The forces creating modern art seemed more alive to me than anything I had known or anything being done in America.” 1 Together with his wife Marguerite, William Zorach produced a number of Cubist- style paintings for the American Armory Show of 1913, and the Forum Exhibition in New York in 1916. Around 1917, Zorach followed the lead of cubist artist Pablo Picasso and began experimenting with wood and stone carvings. By 1922, he devoted himself entirely to sculpture, and like Picasso, became fascinated in “primitive art”—the ritual objects and sculpture pieces of Oceanic, Native American and African tribes. Zorach’s work developed in its use of block-like forms with progressive suppression of detail—drawing elements from sources as disparate as the contemporary cubist and modernist movements, and combining them with forms seen in early African sculpture. Though the forms of his sculpture were often abstract, Zorach primarily focused upon a traditional subject matter, producing such well-known sculptures as Young Girl, now in the Whitney Museum of American Art, and Mother and Child, in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Today, William Zorach is known as one of the earliest and most influential American artists dedicated to direct carving. Zorach also made an impression as a teacher and writer, facilitating a major change in the aesthetic philosophy and technique of sculpture in the United States. During the summers from 1913 to 1922, Zorach and his wife Marguerite painted...

Woman with Two Children in Red - Dutch Style Interior Scene in Oil on Canvas
Located in Soquel, CA
Woman with Two Children in Red - Interior Scene in Oil on Canvas Lovely interior scene by notable artist Joseph Tomanek (Cech-American, 1889-1974). A woman sits near a window, holding a small child dressed in bright red in her lap. Another child, somewhat older, stands next to her, looking at the young child. Soft lights spills though the window, illuminating the scene in a warm glow. A plant with red flowers sits on the windowsill, and foliage can be seen outside. Signed "Tomanek" in the lower right corner (note that the shape above the signature is a toy train) Presented in a carved wood frame with a linen liner. Frame size: 30.75"H x 26.75"W Canvas size: 24"H x 20"W Tomanek, the son of a carpenter, was born in Moravia. His family discouraged his art talent and wanted him to be a shoemaker. He studied in his homeland of Czechoslovakia at the School of Design in Prague. He emigrated to America around the turn of the century and arrived in Chicago in 1910 and worked as an interior decorator. He attended the Art Institute of Chicago and studied with Antonin Sterba. He also studied with Albert Krehbiel and K.A. Buehr. He was a member of the Bohemian Artist Club, Association of Chicago Painters, and Sculptors, and the Chicago Gallery Association. His work is included in the collection of the Vanderpoel Art Association (Chicago). He exhibited from the 1910s-40s, including exhibitions at the Art Institute of Chicago and the Georgia Museum of Art. Of the difficulty of posing nudes in Chicago, he said, "In Paris you can rent little gardens studios and pose your models there in privacy.
