This modern abstract encaustic painting by Allyson Levy is made with Northern Sea Oats and green encaustic, sealed with a layer of neutral wax on a wood panel. The artist begins by finding the organic material in her 4-acre garden in upstate New York which she then arranges and embeds with encaustic on a wooden panel. The brown, earth toned sea oats are laid in a linear pattern on a wood panel with a surface of green encaustic and then sealed with clear wax. The encaustic wraps around to the sides of the panel, revealing some bumps and downward drips, accumulated during the natural drying process. The piece is lightweight and hangs on one d-ring.
About the artist and her work:
After moving to the rural town of Stone Ridge, NY seventeen years ago and starting a 4-acre botanical garden with her husband, mixed media artist, Allyson Levy, has found endless inspiration in the plant kingdom that surrounds her. The garden itself, named “Hortus Conclusus”, consisting of thousands of rare plants and edibles, remains at the epicenter of Levy’s art making. Dynamic abstract composition by Sam Dantone (American, b. 1971). This piece was created as a part of the "Ab-scrap" series, where Dantone uses excess paint from his sign painting business to create new compositions. Whenever there is a little extra paint on a brush, Dantone would add it to a panel, slowly creating a new composition out of the leftovers from his other work. Thus, each piece contains a wide variety of colors and brushstrokes, and the echoes of other compositions.

Artist’s Statement:
“Not once in my life do I know a time when I have not been an artist. My father tells that I once copied the Kleenex logo from the side of the box, at age three. I tribute my abilities to naïve confidence and other’s positive attention. As a kid, drawing was magical . . . Though my art stylings vary widely, one thread stitches all of my work together, (my art) is my critique on man’s apparent love for life and his constant destruction of it.”

Bret Hansen originally from Baltimore, Maryland is a painter and graphic designer based in Los Angeles, California.
His design career spans art direction roles in publishing, branding and advertising at firms in New York, San Francisco and Los Angeles. His bold, dynamic designs can be seen in everything from album covers to advertising campaigns. Bret received his MFA in design from Virginia Commonwealth University and later taught design courses at Pratt Institute’s graduate program in Manhattan.
Bret’s paintings blend expression with a graphic design sensibility and explore themes of alienation, disorientation, authenticity and hope. Incorporating a graphic design sensibility, the artist’s approach in his painting emphasizes clean lines, geometric shapes, and a vibrant, synthetic palette.
