DESCRIPTION OF THE WORK
The Fleagatory (El Pulgatorio) is an early and intense work by Antoni Pitxot, created in 1961, during his phase of material and symbolic experimentation. The dense surface, rich in textures, reveals a tangled world of human figures, skeletons, boxed-in faces, and distorted limbs, trapped within a chaotic grid reminiscent of a cell, a mental lattice, or an infernal architecture.
In this dark and hallucinatory scene, the purgatorial becomes grotesque: rather than redemption, there is confinement, decomposition, and memory held captive. The palette of blacks, oxides, and ochres, together with the material effects, lends the work a dramatic depth, close to psychic automatism and the plastic language of the subconscious.
The title —The Fleagatory (El Pulgatorio)— underscores with irony that tension between the tragic and the ridiculous, the spiritual and the insect-like, as if human torment were a perpetual buzz in an invisible cage.
This work anticipates many of the poetic and plastic concerns that would define Pitxot’s mature production: the obsession with fragmented forms, the petrification of the body, and the symbolic transformation of matter.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Antoni Pitxot Soler was born in Figueres in 1934 into a family deeply connected to art and music. From a young age, he developed a pictorial sensibility that soon led him to exhibit in cities such as Barcelona, Madrid, Lisbon, and Paris. His style, initially expressionist, evolved into a personal universe dominated by mineral textures, ambiguous figures, and dreamlike atmospheres.
From the 1960s onward, Pitxot developed a close friendship and collaboration with Salvador Dalí, with whom he shared not only Catalan roots but also a poetic vision of the world. In the 1980s, he was appointed director of the Dalí Theatre-Museum in Figueres and later lifelong vice-president of the Gala-Salvador Dalí Foundation, safeguarding the artistic legacy of the master.
His work, deeply symbolic, is marked by the mystery of time, the decomposition of the human form, and a fusion between the mineral and the organic. Pitxot was awarded the Gold Medal of Merit in the Fine Arts and is considered a key figure in contemporary Catalan art.

Antoni Pitxot
Dalí's friend and collaborator and member of a family of artists, the artistic production of Antoni Pitxot (Figueres, 1934) starts from a realistic brushstroke of expressionist roots that, When the 1960s arrived and having decided to settle permanently in Cadaqués, he left to immerse himself fully in surrealism. Through a complex creative process ―the artist elaborates sculptural models made with stones from L'Empordà and Cadaqués that, taking into account their anthropomorphic significance, become the starting point for his pictorial work―, the exhibition traces an itinerary through the different themes worked on by the painter, such as the allegory of music or the allegory of memory and time. Born into a family with an artistic tradition and closely related to the Dalí family (it is his uncle Ramon Pitxot, who makes Dalí discover impressionism and determines his vocation as a painter), he lives with his family in San Sebastián from 1946 to 1964. There he has as a drawing teacher Juan Núñez Fernández, who had also been one years before Dalí in Figueres. In the 1950s, while practicing expressionist realism, he made himself known with various exhibitions in San Sebastián, Barcelona, Madrid, Bilbao or Lisbon. In 1964 he settled permanently in the family home in Cadaqués. In this period, his work undergoes a decisive turn, since it directs attention to the study of the objects in his environment: the stones of Cadaqués, from which he gives rise to anamorphic, anthropomorphic and allegorical visions, with which he connects with a current underground of Western painting that ranges from certain masters of Italian Mannerism to Surrealism. Also during these years, rebuilding old family ties, she began her relationship with Dalí, which culminated in a lasting friendship.
