About the Item
"Seed" is a nature inspired abstract circular 3-D paper artwork by Bianca Severijns. The orange and white paper tones create darker areas based on how dense the paper pieces are placed and what kind of pattern Severijns arranges them in. The colors seem to change as the viewer walks around the work because of Severjins' brilliantly created optical illusion. She layers and merges hundreds of small, painted, hand-torn paper pieces into this sculptural wall artwork.
Severijns self-developed her manipulating paper techniques, which are based on layering, merging, and weaving hundreds of small, hand-torn paper pieces into sculptural tapestries, murals, reliefs, and three-dimensional objects. The repetitive act of tearing paper creates a rugged, rough finish on each piece, emulating life itself with all its beauty and harshness, representing life’s imperfections.
Dutch artist Bianca Severijns (b.1964) creates her multifaceted, striking artworks by continuously exploring the paper medium. Rooted in a multicultural background, her art explores themes of displacement, identity, and migration that stem from personal narratives, as well as nature’s cycles. With the hope of starting anew, Severijns' art invites reflection on our shared world.
