Unique Artwork, framed on american black wood box
Caroline Limousin (French, b.1985) also known as Cali is a mixed media artist born in Nantes,
France. From a young age, she devoted herself to drawing. Her method of creation is not a
common one, Cali uses an everyday BIC ballpoint pen to illustrate world known figures such as
Mick Jagger, Marilyn Monroe, Charlie Chaplin, Nelson Mandela, and Kiki de Montparnasse to
name a few. Heir to the cultural revolution of Woodstock at the barricades of May '68, Cali
questions identities and denounces, with glamor and humor, the setbacks of a consumerist
society.
Equipped with a double degree in Applied Arts in Rennes and Nantes, Cali made her debut in
Paris before moving to Saint-Tropez, the inevitable city on the French Riviera where her work is
quickly noticed.
From the counterculture to the starification, Cali puts her messages into play using archetypes
from popular culture and the collective unconscious (butterflies, newspaper clippings, lead
soldiers, hearts....) with newspaper. In her work, she questions identities and denounces, with
glamour and humour, the setbacks of a consumerist society. In 2013, with her exhibition Bic Me
I'm famous in Marrakech, Cali entered the big leagues and exhibits with the leading artists of the
urban art movement like Jef Aérosol.
Making the unusual out of the ordinary, developing a complex technique from simple materials,
this is the bet of this extraordinary artist: she launches out in very large format portraits on paper
with newsprint and the result is bluffing. Her work is showcased at galleries around the world,
from Marrakech, Hong Kong, Monaco, Saint-Tropez to Paris.
