About the Item

acrylic paint over photograph on paper. Feeling that older women seemingly disappear in our society, Brown has created an army of them. In this series, Paperdolls, the artist began with a single nude photograph of herself, and proceeded to repeatedly “dress” the image with paint in an overwhelming myriad of variations of clothing; the only constant being her round, red glasses. With a sharp wit, Brown transforms adornment into armor. The playful becomes subtly strange in its awkward rigidity, emphasized by the repetition of the underlying forms and their placement in a large grid. Brown’s figures portray an interesting mix of strength, vulnerability, clumsiness and confidence. They are part “Victoria’s Secret” model, part dumpy mother-of-the-bride, part Amazon warrior but all exude a palpable force to be reckoned with, a tour de force of feminine self-perception.

Salt crystals, acrylic series (2015) - Fish
By Christine Nguyen
Located in Los Angeles, CA
This is a beautiful layered, mixed media piece using acrylic ink, salt water and salt crystals, on unprocessed photographic paper. The video shows the salt crystals shimmering on the paper when light reflects off it. This piece conjures up a beautiful underwater sea world. The layering of works, creating depth, process and nature are important elements of the artist' work . For example, salt crystallization has been used on found objects and encrusted on photo based works on paper. The salt crystallization process is similar to preserving some objects, while disintegrating others with time. By incorporating salt crystals onto the photo based paintings, the image presents a mystical otherworldly feel, capturing and refracting light and the slippage of time. 20x24 in. Signed en verso. Singular piece. There are 3 different works in this series. Each is a singular unique piece. Pairs well as a diptych / triptych. Inquire for new works or projects. --- Christine Nguyen is a Los Angeles based artist. She received her B.F.A from California State University, Long Beach and M.F.A from University of California, Irvine. As an artist, she is inspired by literature, science, nature, astronomy, geology, marine biology. Using photography’s processes as a point of departure, Christine Nguyen’s pioneering spirit led her to begin manipulating negatives and onward–creating her own by cutting, layering, and adding on. Nguyen’s subsequent explorations embrace drawing...

We Are The Earth
By Elsa Marie Keefe
Located in Brooklyn, NY
We are the Earth is comprised of a photograph, acrylic paint, found objects in nature (bones, leaves, flowers, stones, crystals) and resin. The base materials for the work consist of a wooden paneled canvas that provides the platform for the adhesion of a rolled photographic canvas, a fine art photography print. The canvas print, in this case a double exposure digital photograph, is adhered to the wood using a clear acrylic varnish. Acrylic Paint is added along with the objects that I found in nature, which are all placed in a careful and meticulous fashion, finally cemented in resin. This specific piece of art was my first large scale piece of its kind, created in my studio in Brooklyn in 2019. This piece was inspired by the colors of my travels, the deserts, trees, mountains and sunsets. The human depicted is myself, it is a self-portrait captured in Great Sand Dunes...
