This piece is shipped with the pictured wooden frame and measures 23.25"h x 16.25"w x 2.25"d. "Forests not only have connections with spirits and gods, but it is also linked to our subconscious world of emotions, intuition, memory and imagination. In this cut paper diorama, I wanted to carve out a figure and replace it with the mysterious depths of a forest that is growing wild." -Christine Kim on her work "Celadon" Christine Kim is a Korean-Canadian paper artist. She lives and works as an artist and arts educator north of Toronto. Christine explores portraiture through drawing, painting, cutting and layering. Through this process of collage, Kim examines the surface, shape and volume to conceal and reveal the figure. The interplay between layers and the shadows they cast offer the viewer moments of stillness and movement, fragility and solidity, rigidity and organic flow.

Nest, Highly Detailed Surreal Botanical, Watercolor & Gouache on Paper, Framed
By Christina Haglid
Located in Chicago, IL
This surreal landscape comes from the inner sanctum of artist Christina Haglid. Two paper orbs combine and reveal a portal to another dimension. The artist invites the viewer to take a closer look at nature, to question what is seen and to enter into a newly created world. Meticulous in her execution, Haglid uses watercolor as one might use a colored pencil. Layer upon layer of color is added to achieve this impressively detailed painting. The piece is matted and framed in a simple white frame measuring 20.25 x 16.75. Christina Haglid Nest, 2020 watercolor and gouache on paper 11h x 8w in 27.94h x 20.32w cm CMH051 Artist's Statement Tiny Sanctuaries There has always been an intersection between the process of writing and the act of painting in my work. It has somehow been my guide. In the last four years, during the making of this work, that connection intensified as I started writing short stories and flash fiction while taking online classes. I find the process of writing and painting so different in almost every way, but there is something freeing and generative in writing which helps my painting process. Or perhaps it's a reminder of what painting is for me - something intuitive that needs to be trusted. And what they do have in common is a desire to encapsulate and distill a single moment, a story, about the complexity of our emotions and experiences. At the heart of my work is the recurring depiction of perseverance, strength of will, and a subtle optimism. Symbolically through the objects, precarious situations depict a moment of possible difficulty, often involving the influence of nature. A paper crane left in the snow. A boat nearly filled to the brim, but not submerged and able to drain its own contents carefully. A slide alone at night...

Breath in Between - Figurative contemporary collage of torn photograph on paper
By Keun Young Park
Located in New York, NY
Keun Young Park depicts the body in a state of transformation. Her works on paper show floating figures, faces, draped arms and cupped hands, which appear to be disintegrating and reforming at once. The artist begins her process with original photographs keyed to various evocative hues. The images are shredded by hand into thousands of tiny pieces that are then reassembled. Between the pasted pieces are thin, white, vein-like lines that reveal the texture of the paper's edge. Park's practice has a relationship to the precision of Pointillism, the uniformity of Benday dots and the repetition of digital pixilation but her works retain a tactile, hand-made quality through the irregularly shaped elements from which they are formed. "I intend to reflect upon the a-static character of existence in the flow of time…I attempt to capture the tremor of unstable presence," writes Park. Each work vibrates with a quiet energy, conjuring up thoughts of both the beginning of life and its end. This sense of disembodiment is balanced with a fullness of form and physicality that is derived from the artist's earlier practice as a sculptor. ------------ "In my work, I reflect upon the ecstatic character of existence in the flow of time as well as the opposite sides of nature – negative and positive, construction and destruction, presence and absence, and life and death. I believe that everything is constantly changing, either being generated or destroyed. Presence is just a state of being and the reality of an object has ambiguity in this shifting. In my recent work, the micro-collage or paper mosaic, I capture the tremor of unstable presence. I take pictures of parts of the body or face, change the color and saturation of those images by Photoshop and print them out on paper. Then, I tear the pictures and paste them back together piece-by-piece. Through this process of breaking down photo images and recomposing them, figures have thousands of tiny particles and textures that make the images look blurry and tremulous." Bio Keun Young Park was born in 1977 and educated in Seoul, South Korea. She received BFA and MFA Degree in Sculpture at Seoul National University. Since 2005, Keun Young has lived and worked in New York and New Jersey. She was selected as an A.I.R. Gallery Fellowship Recipient, a winner of Curator’s Choice, a competition of ATOA, ‘Artist Talk on Art’ organization and she received Juror’s award at ‘Small Works’, international competition of NYU gallery. Keun Young had numerous solo and group exhibitions at galleries and art fairs in the United States, Europe and Asia. Item Description: Keun Young Park Breath in...
