About the Item

Circle of Constance Howard British School, circa 1950 Cats and Flowers in a Conservatory Applique work picture Framed 60 by 50.5 cm., 23 ¾ by 20 in. (frame size 76 by 66 cm., 30 by 26 in.) Provenance: With Frost & Reed, 1950; Mrs H H Budd (?). The present work, glazed and in this original frame, was with the prominent London fine art dealers Frost and Reed in 1950 suggesting it was a work by a leading exponent of the newly fashionable and artistically acknowledged group of British textile artists and embroiderers. The modernised art form was pioneered by Constance Howard (1910-2000) who taught embroidery at Goldsmiths College. The piece predates Howard’s most famous piece, The Country Wife, a large textile hanging for the Country Pavilion of the Festival of Britain exhibition of 1951 (now in the collection of the National Needlework Archive). She was assisted in the work by some of her students, including Mary Quant. In 1953 Goldsmith’s established a separate department for embroidery, later making Howard the Department Head. The advanced design and use of different stitches, needlework techniques and fabrics suggests this may be the work of one of Howard’s students, if not by her own hand.

The present work is a costume design for a page in Androcles and the Lion, a play in two acts by George Bernard. Rutherston designed the set and costumes for the 1913 premier production performed at St James’s Theatre, London and produced by Harley Granville-Barker. Born Albert Daniel Rothenstein, he was the youngest of the six children of Moritz and Bertha Rothenstein, German-Jewish immigrants who had settled in Bradford, Yorkshire in the 1860s. He and his siblings proved to be a hugely talented and artistic family, his elder brother became Sir William Rotherstein (1872-1945), the artist and director of the Royal College of Art; two of his other siblings, Charles Rutherston and Emily Hesslein, both accumulated major modern British and French art collections and his nephew Sir John Rothenstein was direct of the Tate Gallery. He was educated at Bradford Grammar School before moving to London in 1898 to study at the Slade School of Art where he became close friends with Augustus John and William Orpen. He met Walter Sickert during a painting holiday in France in 1900 and by introducing Sickert to Spencer Gove became instrumental in the beginning of the Camden Town Group. He was one of Sickert’s most frequent companions and was one of the original members of the Fitzroy Street Group. Untitled, Figurative, Batik on Cloth by Modern Indian Artist Laxma Goud-In Stock
By Laxma Goud
Located in Kolkata, West Bengal
K. Laxma Goud - Untitled - 24 x 34 inches Batik on Cloth ( FRAMED ALL IN DOOR DELIVERED ) Style : Goud displays versatility over a range of mediums, from printmaking, drawing, watercolour, gouache and pastels to glass painting and sculpture in bronze and terracotta. Over the many years of his artistic career, he is known to have moved from one medium to another with élan. Fellow artist T. Vaikuntam, in one of his interviews, reminisces that it was Laxma Goud who introduced him to the art of sketching and made him aware of the possibilities of this medium. When one looks at Goud’s work, rustic, raw, and potent might be the first words that come to mind. His portraits of men and women represent the dynamic Indian ethos rather than particular individual identities. A recurrent theme with the artist is that of the erotic, treated as an active and powerful aspect of male and female sexuality and existence. Goud’s work is dramatic; his protagonists are raw and vivacious in their appeal, imbibed with energy that reverberates through his strokes and textures. Most of Goud’s art is centered on the rural, recreating landscapes from his childhood as if they were frozen in time. In the artist’s later work, his figures turn softer, more introspective than brash in their outlook. About the Artist and his work : Born : 1940 in Nizampur, Andhra Pradesh...

What Happens To Us When We Die
By Amy Wilson
Located in Red Bank, NJ
I am a multi-disciplinary artist who has professionally shown my work in dozens of galleries and museums since the late 1990s. But while my work can take many different forms, my practice is rooted in drawing. Whether I am working on the watercolor and acrylic pieces, or fiber-based pieces, every project and every idea begins with a drawing. Through that process I lay out my ideas, ask myself questions, experiment with different options, and try to resolve all the formal and conceptual issues I will attempt in my final piece. The themes I have explored in my work from 1999 on, and even before then, have remained the same even though my style has shifted radically. I have been interested in exploring self-portraiture, personal narratives, femininity, politics, and the use of text in art. I have remained constant in my exploration of critical theory and art history, and drawn influence from artists as diverse as Joseph Beuys, Henry Darger, and Adrian Piper.
