Harry Koursaros (1928-1986) Peaceable Kingdom, the Ram, 1983 Framed 34 X 45. sheet 25.5 X 37 Hand Signed Provenance: Bank of Boston corporate collection. bears label verso. Harry Koursaros, Artist, painter, printmaker and filmmaker Student at Albright College class of 1950. In 1964 he came to Albright College as professor to establish an Art Department, and gained national recognition. He started as a modernist realist, later moving to Abstract Expressionism and eventually into Pattern & Decoration. He painted with metallic and iridescent pigments. In the late 1960s he began a program of "underground" films at the college. Many of these were avant-garde works from New York that included works by Andy Warhol. One of Koursaros students, Jerry Tartaglia, founded in 1974 the Berks Filmmakers, a group of cutting-edge movie makers who acquired an international reputation. He was included in numerous shows: "Discovering Color": Two Decades of Abstraction, paintings, works on paper, and prints from three pivotal art movements in America during the sixties and seventies: Abstract Expressionism, Color Field Painting, and Minimalism. Artists include Edward Avedisian, Walter Darby Bannard, Dan Christensen, John Grillo, Lee Krasner, and more. “Drawn From the Collection” paintings, limited edition prints and photos by such notables, among others, as Mark Tobey, Alice Baber, Rufino Tamayo and a photograph by Gordon Parks. "20/20": The Visionary Legacy of Doris Chanin Freedman. Works by Nicholas Africano, Ida Applebroog, William Baziotes, Bernd and Hilla Becher, Joseph Beuys, Jime Dine, Gunther Forg, Leon Golub, April Gornik, Hans Haacke, Keith Haring, Jenny Holzer, Komar and Melamid, Harry Koursaros, Lee Krasner, Robert Mapplethorpe, Ana Mendieta, Nam June Paik, Andy Warhol, Tom Watcke. "Artists for Kennedy" Prominent artists contributed original works to the project. Robert Rauschenberg, Leon Polk Smith, Jack Youngerman, Ilya Bolotowsky, Lowell Nesbitt and Richard Anuszkiewicz. He also showed at Andre Zarre Gallery and was included in the show Persistent Patterns in 1979 with Miriam Schapiro, Joyce Kozloff, Mary Grigoriadis, Tony Robbin and Robert Zakanitch. Zarre also showed Tony Bechara, Sonia Delaunay, Nassos Daphnis, Perle Fine, Budd Hopkins, Richard Hunt, Buffie Johnson, Harry Koursaros, Pat Lipsky, From a review by art critic Theodore Wolff, These handsome and highly provocative paintings are art, and not decoration or design. They are too alive, too stimulating, to function as either of the latter. Their all-over patterning and tightly controlled repetitive designs, while crucial to their pictorial identity, are intended to incite intellectual as well as aesthetic response, not to lull the sensibilities , as would be the case with decoration. Their precise and lovingly defined details - tiny pictographs of men, women, plants, animals, and aquatic life - make reference to classical antiquity, most especially to images found on Minoan and Cycladic pottery. Thus they add a dimension of thematic complexity and significance. The color in Koursaros's paintings is rich, generally compartmentalized, and often glowing, with the total effect being one of iridescence and spatial ambiguity. This is extremely sophisticated art. Its brilliant effects beautifully illustrate our current freedom to borrow from all previous styles - even from the often maligned decorative arts of age-old cultures. It also represents one artist's sensitive and judicious integration of such borrowings into an extraordinarily alive and ''modern'' pictorial statement.

Inscribed verso Enthymeme Wm. Pellicone #14, 9-4-58. Label on reverse with a typed definition for Enthymeme. Dimensions: 27 inches high, 42.5 inches wide. Metal wrap frame. Provenance: from a Shelter Island NY home that was designed by architect Henry J. Gazon - A.I.A. built in 1959. William Pellicone (1915-2004) was an American painter known for his abstract compositions and use of vibrant colors. He was born in New York City and studied at the Art Students League and the Brooklyn Museum Art School. Pellicone's early work was influenced by the Social Realist movement of the 1930s and 1940s, with his paintings often featuring realistic depictions of urban scenes and working-class people. However, in the 1950s he shifted towards abstraction, exploring the interplay of color and form. Pellicone's mature style was characterized by his use of vibrant, saturated colors, often applied in thick layers of paint. His paintings often featured geometric shapes and organic forms, with a strong sense of movement and energy. In addition to his painting, Pellicone was also a respected teacher and arts administrator. He taught at the New York Institute of Technology and the State University of New York, and served as the director of the Islip Art Museum on Long Island. Pellicone's artwork was exhibited widely during his lifetime, and he was the recipient of numerous awards and honors, including a National Endowment for the Arts grant in 1977. Today, his paintings can be found in the collections of museums and galleries around the world, including the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington, D.C. and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Gregg Robinson, American (born 1948) "Cipher Bar 20" Oil on Canvasboard Panel. Artist signed, title and dated 1990 far right. Very minor rubbing to paint. Panel measures 15-1/4" H x 63-1/2" W, frame measures 24-1/4" H x 72-1/4" GREGG ROBINSON The universe of visual art encompasses a huge spectrum of motivation and means of expression. Examples range from the most syrupy sentimentality to extremes of moral and intellectual confrontation. For me, the creative process is, on the simplest level, an aesthetic puzzle. Elements of the puzzle include contrast, color, visual texture, graphic pattern, and in some recent work, a simple cryptic symbolism. I have never been particularly interested in lyric or pictorial content, and though some of my work does contain undeniable spatial illusion, even that tends to be a by-product rather than a goal of the primary pursuit: the balance of light and dark, pure color and organic neutrals, energy and calm, strong pattern and subtle field. Having grown up in an environment of contemporary architecture, I have always valued the classic modern synthesis of form and function exemplified by the Bauhaus movement of the early 20th century. Hence, the simplest solutions are often the most satisfying. Obviously, the modernist ideal of efficiency in form and function requires that method of execution be as well adapted to the aesthetic goal as the visual language itself. The media before you is the result of many years of experimentation that came to its current form in early 1992. I work with dry pigment over a plaster surface. My tools are broad knives, sponges, rags and masking. The finish is a high gloss alkyd resin. CORPORATE COLLECTIONS: Allstate Insurance NBC Productions Alaska...

He died in June 2015. During the 1950's, Neuman painted in an Abstract Expressionist style, incorporating the stylistic signifiers of the Bay Area School such as broad surface treatments, a full color palette, and atmospheric light. In the 1960's, Neuman's art evolved into geometric abstraction, fusing form and content that often verged on symbolism. He produced various bodies of works such as the Kandinsky-esque cosmos paintings...
