About the Item
A tribute to the Ansonia, a luxurious building on the Upper West Side of Manhattan (Broadway and 73-74th St., Erected between 1899 and 1904) First built as a hotel by William Earle Dodge Stokes with Beaux-Art style with a Parisian style mansard roof.
The Ansonia has had many celebrated residents, including baseball player Babe Ruth. It housed the Continental Baths, a gay bathhouse where Bette Midler provided musical entertainment early in her career, with Barry Manilow as her accompanist. From 1977 until 1980, The Ansonia Hotel’s basement was home to Plato’s Retreat, an open door swinger sex club.
Cavalieri’s aim is to merge contemporary imagery with the time-honored processes of painted stained glass, a material with a powerful spiritual history. He incorporates contemporary colors and design and often adds humor.
His technique was originally created by Medieval stained glass artists, and used enamel paints which were made of ground glass, metals and pigment. These paints were applied to the glass surface then kiln fired at a temperature of 1300 degrees Fahrenheit (700 degrees Celsius). Once cooled, the glass was soldered together. Cavalieri updates this historic process by incorporating silk screening and airbrushing techniques, along with hand painting. His finished art is set into wall hung light boxes with internal LED lighting.
Joseph Cavalieri is an award winning native New York artist and educator. His work can be seen in the permanent collection of the Museum of Arts and Design, the Italian American Museum, the Leslie-Lohman Museum, and the Stax Museum. He has produced private and public art commissions including a MTA Arts for Transit public art installation at the Philipse Manor Train Station in Westchester, New York. His work has been collected by Morgan Spurlock, and two Simpson’s writers.

View AllLarge Sculpture: 'Purple Fiesta: Baggage' Emotional Baggage Cart
By Theda Sandiford
Located in New York, NY
My Emotional Baggage Carts are vessels to dispose of racial trauma. The act of making, weaves the sting of macro and microaggressions into the cart, freeing me from these constraints.
Each recovered shopping cart is unique, but they all are woven with upcycled materials like rope, paracord, grocery bags, rope lights, beads, fabric, and bottle caps. The cart is with a protective zip tie blanket to trap trauma and prevent its escape.
For me, my Emotional Baggage Carts are a release, for you, they are an opportunity to look within and recognize any emotional baggage you, yourself may be carrying and release it.

About Jennifer Bartlett:
By the mid-1970s, Jennifer Bartlett (1941-2022, b. Long Beach, California) had emerged as a leading American artist of her time—particularly following the landmark presentation at Paula Cooper Gallery of Rhapsody (1976), Bartlett’s magnum opus, now in the collection of the Museum of Modern Art, New York. Bartlett’s first survey exhibition was held in 1985 at the Walker Art Center, Minneapolis, and traveled to the Brooklyn Museum, New York, and the Carnegie Museum of Art, Philadelphia, among others. In 2006, the Addison Gallery of American Art surveyed Bartlett’s early enameled steel plate paintings in the period from 1968–76. In 2013-14, Klaus Ottmann curated her second traveling survey, which visited the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and the Parrish Art Museum, New York. In 2014, the Cleveland Museum of Art united her three monumental plate...
