About the artist: Maria Burtis’ paintings emerge from a dialogue between physical action and internal stillness, resulting in richly layered works that balance spontaneity and refinement. Her process begins with energetic marks, washes, and brushstrokes, followed by an intuitive cycle of adding, obscuring, and revealing. By embracing uncertainty, she keeps her paintings open and evolving, allowing them to breathe with depth and life. While inspired by the natural world, her work ultimately explores an internal landscape, aiming to evoke a deep, somatic response in viewers and invite them into a space of personal discovery.
A dedicated daily practice has been central to Burtis’ artistic journey since 2005, yielding over 6,500 small works that inform her larger abstract paintings and collages. She studied Religion and Art History at Carleton College before earning a BFA in Painting from the Massachusetts College of Art. Her work is widely collected and has been exhibited nationally, including at the de Young Museum in San Francisco. Burtis lives in San Francisco and works out of her studio in Sausalito.
