Persian Illuminated Miniature with Four Figures Playing Polo in a Landscape
Located in Milwaukee, WI
The present illuminated folio page contains a fine miniature depicting four figures playing polo. Polo, also called 'chagun,' was the sport of kings and princes of central Asia and Iran, and the sport probably originated there in the 6th century BCE. Polo matches appear in a large number of early Persian texts, including in the writings of the 10th century epic writer Abu l-Qasim al-Firdawsi: He describes numerous polo matches in his famous 'Shahnameh' (The Persian Book of Kings). This particular illumination also is closely related to an example held at the Smithsonian Museum of Asian Art: a folio from 'Guy u Chawgan' (The ball and the polo-mallet) which shows a polo game with the dervish and the shah. 12 x 8.25 inches, artwork 19.75 x 15.88 inches, frame accompanied on the back with an image of the verso framed to conservation standards with a 100% rag silk-lined mat in a gold gilded frame A Persian miniature is a small Persian painting on paper, whether a book illustration or a separate work of art intended to be kept in an album of such works called a muraqqa. The techniques are broadly comparable to the Western and Byzantine traditions of miniatures in illuminated manuscripts. Although there is an equally well-established Persian tradition of wall-painting, the survival rate and state of preservation of miniatures is better, and miniatures are much the best-known form of Persian painting in the West, and many of the most important examples are in Western, or Turkish, museums. Miniature painting became a significant genre in Persian art in the 13th century, receiving Chinese influence after the Mongol conquests, and the highest point in the tradition was reached in the 15th and 16th centuries. The tradition continued, under some Western influence, after this, and has many modern exponents. The Persian miniature was the dominant influence on other Islamic miniature traditions, principally the Ottoman miniature...

Tupha latifolia
Located in Palm Desert, CA
A work by Penelope Gottlieb. "Tupha latifolia" is acrylic and ink over an Audubon print by contemporary, female artist Penelope Gottlieb. The artwork is signed in the lower right, "PG". After receiving her BFA from the Art Center College for Design in Pasadena, Penelope Gottlieb went on to earn her MFA from the University of California in Santa Barbara where she currently lives and works. Gottlieb’s artistic repertoire is thoroughly modern and includes innovative paintings as well as compelling media design, for which she received an Emmy in the field of motion picture title design in 1993. Gottlieb’s more recent works showcase a unique synthesis of her modern graphic design background and the vintage botanical renderings of natural scientists. However, her paintings are also unique in their perspective on the traditional floral still life. Stylized flora and fauna are depicted as emanating from a comic book explosion, illustrating what the artist refers to as “the dire state of the planet” as faced with species extinction and the resulting biological and ecological ramifications. These violent representations of the artistically typified placid natural world are intended as “visual eulogies for lost plant life.” The particular specimens that Gottlieb depicts are in fact extinct and she is able to recreate them only from historical drawings and botanist’s descriptions. Although avant-garde and aesthetically unique, Gottlieb’s paintings delineate clear influences from the renowned artists of Pop and Expressionist art. The composition of many of her paintings is reminiscent of Kandinsky’s canvas-filling outpours while her bold color palette and black outlines recall Lichtenstein’s comic book panels. Her work is also closely related to a more contemporary group of artists, including Alexis Rockman...

"Site Plan with Projected Section and Survey Net" mylar drawing Roden Crater
Located in Phoenix, AZ
James Turrell Site Plan with Projected Section and Survey Net, 1992 mylar, beeswax, emulsion, ink, liquitex, wax pastel 41.5" x 60.5" framed Unique Since the 1960s, James Turrell has experimented with visual perception and the materiality of light. Early in his career, he was associated with the Light and Space movement in Southern California and participated in the Los Angeles County Museum of Art’s landmark 1967-1971 project Art and Technology, which paired artists with emerging industries and technologies of the period. Interested in sensory deprivation and the Ganzfeld effect, his light defined shapes, skyspaces framing the sky, and built environments of horizon-less saturated color provoke a reflexive state that the artist has described as “seeing yourself seeing” – a state in which the viewer is aware of the functioning of their senses and recognizes light as a tangible substance. Since 1979, Turrell has been constructing his magnum opus at the Roden Crater...

Abstract MIxed Media Drawing Vibrant Modernist Color Watercolor Painting
Located in Surfside, FL
John Wood (b. 1945, Utah) is a Bay Area artist who currently resides in Emeryville, CA. He received his BFA in painting from the University of Utah in 1971, and an MFA from the Cranbrook Academy of Art in 1974. Wood’s abstract imagery is the culmination of his lifetime of work in art. His current work uses the human form as a starting point to build up layers of line, form and color in graphite, crayon, oil pastel and enamel. He strives to be as open and engaged as possible with the developing image, trusting that the art will lead him in the right direction. In the end, the work alludes to the human body symbolically, but Woods is much more interested in the emotional and sensual qualities that emerge rather than recognizable forms. In addition to producing his own art, Woods has inspired many through independent mural projects with children of all ages in Utah, New York, and California. He has taught at Cranbrook Academy Museum, through the NEA Artist-in-Education Program, as a private instructor for children’s art in New York and Salt Lake City, as a drawing and painting instructor at Farmington Community Center, and as head of the fine arts department at Judge Memorial Catholic High School in Salt Lake City. Woods has exhibited his work in solo and group exhibitions throughout the United States including Utah, New York, California, Colorado; and museums such as the Morris Graves Museum of Art, Marin Museum of Contemporary Art, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, Utah Museum of Fine Art, Springville Museum of Art, and the Cranbrook Academy of Art Museum. Persian Illuminated Miniature with Three Hunters on Horseback in a Landscape
Located in Milwaukee, WI
The present illuminated folio page contains a fine miniature depicting three figures hunting while on horseback, an image meant to accompany a historic epic. During the medieval period, hunting was an important pastime of male nobility throughout the Islamic world. The Quran itself explicitly endorses hunting and the use of animals to aid in capturing prey: "Lawful to you are foodstuffs that are good to eat and any game that, at your wish, is captured by beasts of prey which train as you do dogs, according to the method that Allah has taught you, after you have spoken the name of Allah over it." (Q 6:4) Muslim princes and nobles enjoyed the chase of the prey via horseback, using bow and arrow, crossbows, and blowpipes to capture their prey Horseback riding itself trained young men in the necessary skills for armed combat and warfare, developing their speed and strength.
