Original Hand Signed by Johnathan Ball Johnathan Ball has been working for more than 15 years to establish a style of painting that transforms the language of the street into a hybrid form of abstraction and urban realism. From the outset, JBall has sought to interpret his experience of cities that have served as crossroads in his life, from Toronto to New York to Miami the urban experience is a central theme in his work. Not always bound to one genre he also works from iconic images and film stills while purposefully engaging with the rich history of painting since the rise of abstraction in the 1950s. His work provides markers of time, engages the viewer with mood and line tracing the painting providing an artist lead tour of the work. JBall is also well known for his sculptural work. Sculpting anatomical forms using them as an entirely new canvas for his painting. His sculptures are an accent to his painted works, sometimes bringing levity. JBall is an active muralist working with community programs such as Toronto’s Street Art initiative, as well as private commissions. Rebecca Alston is a New York-based interdisciplinary artist and architectural designer. She is known for her rigorous exploration of color and form, meticulous use of line, and the integration of scientific principles within the visual arts. Her strong foundation has led to the investigation and innovative approaches to experimental mixed media work on paper, canvas, reliefs, and space. Her most recent work explores the tension between environmental, social, and political issues.
Alston pursued post-graduate programs for several years at New York University and the professional program at Harvard University GSD. She obtained her BFA from Auburn University and an M.A. in Architecture from Kansas State University, where she was also an Assistant Professor in Environmental Design and Color Theory and Perception.
She also maintains a studio on the Gulf Coast and has lived in London and traveled extensively in Asia. She has exhibited widely in Holland, Japan, and England as well as in Mississippi, Chicago, Kansas City, Washington D.C., and New York City. Alston’s work is in the Permanent Collection of The National Museum of Women in the Arts, The MADI Museum of Art, The Jule Collins Smith Museum of Art, and The Mississippi Museum of Art. She was awarded the Bronze Award by the Japanese Government for the Urban Art Plaza she designed in Osaka.

Gold & Despair is my adaptation of Gustav Klimt’s masterpiece "The Woman In Gold", also known as The Mona Lisa of Austria. Having admired the symbolic art of Klimt since my working days as a fine art restorer at Vienna’s prestigious Conservation Institute (Bundesdenkmalamt) in the 1980’s, I conceived the idea to recreate the jewel of his gilded period with an interpretive lens on the looming darkness of the Holocaust and World War II.
As a native of Austria, Salzburg, I have developed an appreciation for Klimt’s art, and Art Nouveau in general. For the last thirty years, I have lived in New York City and worked as a fine art restorer, conservator, and painter as well as in the healing arts.
Klimt had executed The Woman in Gold in the span of four years (1903-1907). My own creative process during 2014-2017, reflects my diligent care and thoroughness in rendering the original painting. In 2014, I started with the preparation of the canvas using Klimt’s original size of 54 x 54 inches (167 x 167 cm). For gesso, I used the traditional method of rabbit skin glue and chalk. For the painting, I used oil paints and genuine 23.5 karat gold in various shades, as well as silver leaves, to magnify the brilliant sheen of Klimt’s gold...
