About the Item
The celebration of life and death in Yoruba land is deeply connected to the use of Aso Oke, a traditional and cultural wear of the Yorubas. The ones used in Ondo to celebrate the living and the dead come in different styles and colours. Some of them are Sanyan (Sanmiyan in Ondo), Etu, Alaari, and Petuje. Although often used as preferred, Sanyan is a greyish brown coloured Aso Oke made from silkworm (the only natural method that gives Sanyan its colour). It is mainly worn for burial ceremonies to honour the dead. At times, the whole Aso oke regalia of Agbada and Sokoto or Iro, Buba and Gele, depending on the gender, is worn for the deceased and also used to decorate the room they are placed in for final burial.
Weddings are celebrated in Alaari (a bright wine-coloured Aso Oke mixed with a few stripes of green and gold most times). Or Etu (a rich indigo-coloured Aso Oke, sometimes mixed with stripes of sky blue or with Alaari itself, which is called Dametu) is worn in full regalia by the families of the bride and groom. Both the bride's and groom's families can choose to use the same Aso Oke, while that of the Bride and groom is different to separate them from the crowd.
The artist's paintings represent the rich history and traditions of the Ondo's usage of Aso Oke for both burial and wedding ceremonies. The artist paints the scene of a wedding banquet where the bride is in a rich Alaari regalia, kneeling to receive her parents' blessings, who are dressed in a beautiful Dametu outfit. He also painted another scene depicting the acceptance of the bride into the groom's family by having her sit on the laps of the groom's parents, who are also dressed in a rich Dametu outfit. The other paintings are scenes of burial ceremonies where the people are dressed in full Sanyan regalia. One of the paintings carries a scene where they are crying while paying their last respect to the deceased. The other scene is a place where the deceased family members are dancing to honour the life of the deceased based on tradition.
The artist uses the vibrant Aso Oke of Ondo-Alaari, Etu, Dametu, and Sanyan to symbolize life and death. Through his paintings, he reflects on the celebration of life and the solemnity of death. Each painting embodies the blend of tradition with modern expression. The artist invites the viewers to reflect on how these textiles honour both the vitality of life and the inevitability of death.

About Artist
Michael Adetula's paintings convey his fascination for contemporary attitudes, which are embellished with fragments of history. Working with images of trendy young people in poses that suggest the hipness of modernity, his characters have on their bodies paintings and designs of elements that tell stories that stretch beyond their present, to the past, or even their genetic memories. Adetula’s work addresses cultural themes of identity to document how the past reflects on the present. “The time capsules we live in are interconnected in more ways than we can grasp, says Adetula.
His primary medium is Acrylic on canvas, which is complemented by his application of colored pens. With this, he can create works that have bold brush strokes as well as intricate paintings on the body that also serve as texture. The backgrounds and paintings of clothes worn by his subjects are similar in rendition, while the details on the bodies of his subjects are painted with a mixture of both mediums.
There is an application of the philosophy of natural synthesis whereby outside influences, concepts, and ideas come together in Adetula’s compositions. Colors, symbols, tones, and shades unite in the intricate paintings on the body, which include images of trees, cowries, traditional African combs, and flowers. His depictions symbolize tradition, life, belief systems, emotions, and transitions. Creativity, for him, is a powerful tool for exploring deeply the cultural heritage of the people. His inklings are carefully arranged to reflect the impact of this ideology in the fullness of time. This is evident in his works such as "A Lady with the Swag" and "The Way We Are."
Inspired by a fertile imagination, Adetula ’s evocative paintings simultaneously address contemporary cultural life by adding tinges of the past. This vision helps him grasp the clear essence and meaning of his subjects and themes, and by so doing, makes clear his message of giving life to his art and giving his artful messages to society.
