About the Item
In the “Mirrors” series, Tigran Tsitoghdzyan explores the complexities of self-identity in a media-driven society. The process begins with the artist photographing a model and her hands in his studio, which are used as a reference for a large scale oil painting. Using a photorealistic approach with overtones of surrealism, he fuses transparent layers of hands over the face to conceal/reveal the subject’s hidden/unhidden identity. The completed portraits are photographed and printed on oversized archival board, which are then further veiled in a network of calligraphic gestures hand drawn by the artist.

Tigran Tsitoghdzyan
Tigran Tsitoghdzyan is a New York-based artist and painter. He was born in Yerevan, Armenia in 1976. By the age of 10, his work was chosen to be displayed in a solo exhibition by Henrik Iguityan, founder and director of both the Modern Art Museum and Children's Art Museum, based in Yerevan. The exhibition featured over 100 of Tsitoghdzyan's paintings and also exhibited in Spain, Russia, Japan and the US. In 1993, Tsitoghdzyan entered the Fine Art Academy of Yerevan and after graduating in 1999 moved to Europe to continue his education. That year, he entered Ecole Cantonale d'Art du Valais in Switzerland, where he earned a Bachelor's degree in 2002 and a Master of Art in the Public Sphere (MAPS) in 2005. Tsitoghdzyan arrived in New York in 2009.
