About the Item

Mario Toccangini, "Portrait of a Lady," mixed media, watercolor and charcoal on paper, signed and dated 1958 lower right, abstract expressionism. In the Italy of the first half of the twentieth century, there is a place that becomes the cradle of fruitful artists, painters, graphic designers, sculptors, architects and designers, who will make the history of twentieth-century Italian art. We are talking about the city of Pistoia, twenty kilometers from the majestic and intrusive Florence, the city that in the 1960s would become home to Poltronova, which would become an icon of modern design. But before Poltronova Pistoia is the city of Giovanni Michelucci, of Marino Marini, Agenore Fabbri, Sigfrido Bartolini, Mario Nigro, and the large group of twentieth-century Pistoiese avant-gardists and painters, an extraordinary unicum in the contemporary art scene . Also part of this group is the lesser known, but no less capable, Mario Toccangini. Born and raised in this avant-garde milieu, inspired by the vision of a popular world, he dwelled on portraying women, interpreted according to a taste still oriented toward abstract expressionism. This "Portrait of a Lady," executed in mixed media, confirms this for us, just as it confirms his great abilities. The painting has its original frame and was framed, as the label on the back confirms, at the Morandi Gallery in Pistoia, at that time a lively meeting place for Pistoian artists. Also behind is the authentic manuscript from the painter. Measurements frame 93 x 69 cm work 86 x 61 cm

Martin Borgord (1869-1935) Active in California, New York, Paris, Holland "Portrait of an Elegant Woman," oil painting on wood signed lower right and dedicated to Madame Merlet. Attended: San Francisco Art Association School of Design, Académie des Beaux-Arts de Paris, Académie Julian de Paris, New York School of Art "In the past I worked on light and shadow effects. Now I paint exclusively for unusual effects and color harmonies." It is with these words that Martin Borgord, a Norwegian-born but naturalized American painter, interviewed by a journalist from the Hartford Courant, explains our painting.Straddling the line between Impressionism and Expressionism, the elegant lady loses the sharpness of detail, blending with light and color in quick, dense brushstrokes. Excellent state of preservation.Presented in antique carved and silvered wooden frame. It has a regular Fine Arts export certificate. Measurements Panel 41 x 33 cm Frame 51x43 cm BIOGRAPHY Martin Borgord was born February 8, 1869, in Guasdal, Norway, and died March 25, 1935, in Riverside, California. Interested in both painting and sculpture, Borgord will go to Paris. He was accepted to study at the Académie Julian with Jean-Paul Laurens and at the Académie des Beaux-Arts with sculptor Charles Raoul Verlet. In 1896, Martin Borgord returned to New York and enrolled in the new Chase School of Art (later renamed the New York School of Art) with William Merritt.
