About the Item
"Alphabet Colors" is an original mixed media drawing on canvas by Tom Shelton. The artist used crayon, colored pencil, and ink. The artist says:
“Looking at cursive writing teaching aids, I looked for, and couldn't find transitions between all the letters in the alphabet. I wanted to see what each transition looked like. I wondered if it was possible to write every transition, from one letter to another, both in front and behind ("ab", "ba"), using each transition only once, in 26 lines. And if there would be a pattern. That would mean, using the letters "a", "b", "c", and "d" that there would have to be the sequences, "acdb", "bdca", "cbad", and "dabc", and no other.
Luckily, my wife's father is a mathematics professor, so I put the question to him. A couple hours later he replied with a formula. Not being able to see any pattern from the letters, I assigned each letter a color to get a better view. This picture is the result: the letters on the left, and their colors on the right - both right and left are the same pattern.”
35" x 48" art

Shelton’s artworks are included in the collection of the Smithsonian Institute, Washington, D.C., The Chase Manhattan Bank, New York, The Allen Museum of Art at Oberlin College in Ohio and the International Headquarters of Fiserv in Milwaukee.

Porch drawing 2 (Abstract Painting)
By Peter Soriano
Located in London, GB
Porch drawing 2 (Abstract Painting)
Spray paint, pencil, ink, watercolor on paper. Unframed.
Peter Soriano works on relatively large sheets of Japanese paper with a tendency to work from something observed, ideally around him. He tends to be “in” the configuration that is the subject of the work.
Soriano is fond of “systems” objects attached to other objects, such as the wiring plan of a room. But very often there are other shapes that play a role in the work.
The artist would fold and rework a piece a number of times. Folding seems to concentrate the dialogue that attracts him. Reworking is part of his nature. The finished work normally is the result of this ebb and flow between the heightening and repositioning the relationship between forms.
This drawing highlights the configurations of a large porch that Soriano used as a studio in Maine during Summer 2010.
Peter Soriano is a Philippines-born French-American abstract artist who divides his time between New York City and Penobscot, Maine. Although he began his career as a sculptor, his work is now two-dimensional. He is known for his bold spray-painted wall murals...
