Two 12-inch vinyl records held in gatefold sleeve with silkscreen cover jacket in IKB International Klein Blue Color.
12 7/10 × 12 7/10 inches
Edition of 500
Hand numbered from the limited edition of only 500 (the work is not signed, but it is hand numbered)
Unframed mixed media
This highly collectible vintage Yves Klein mixed media work, features two (2) 12 inch vinyl records held inside a limited edition numbered gatefold sleeve with dazzling IKB (International Klein Blue) color on the cover - a frameable work of art - and a photograph of the artist on the gatefold. The records contain the live recording of two lectures Yves Klein gave that were recorded at the Grand Amphithéâtre de l'Université de la Sorbonne, Paris, France: "The Evolution of Art Toward the Immaterial", and "The Architecture of the Air." Klein delivered the Sorbonne lectures just before his first exhibition with Iris Clerc, the gallerist who organized the event, and is duly credited in the recordings. That same year, he met Hains, Villéglé, Dufrène, Restany and Tinguely - who went on to form the group "The New Realists". An extremely rare multiple (especially in such fine condition as it's a silkscreened album cover) featuring nothing but Klein's iconic IKB color on the whole cover, front and back. No text or anything else to distract from the deep rich pure International Klein Blue color. Hand numbered inside from an edition of 500. Would look terrific framed on the wall or displayed with the gatefold open in a perspex box, revealing the dazzling silkscreen cover, the Klein portrait and the actual recordings. . IKB stands for "International Klein Blue" - and to this day, more than half a century on, it still denotes a rich blue uniquely associated with Yves Klein. Published by RPM, Paris.
In good vintage condition with overall distress to the cover esp corners; the IKB color is strikingly bright; the interior has some foxing; not affecting the gorgeous IKB color which will look stunning framed
Yves Klein Biography:
Yves Klein was born on April 28, 1928, in Nice, France. From 1942 to 1946, he studied at the École nationale de la marine marchande and the École nationale des langues orientales vivantes (now Institut national des langues et civilisations orientales) and began practicing judo. At this time, he became friends with artist Arman and singer Claude Pascal and started to paint. Klein composed his first one-note Symphonie monotone (Monotone Symphony) in 1947. From 1948 to 1952, he traveled to Italy, the United Kingdom, Spain, and Japan. In 1955, Klein settled permanently in Paris, where he was given a solo exhibition at the Club des Solitaires. His monochrome paintings were shown at the Galerie Colette Allendy, Paris, in 1956.
In 1957, Klein entered his époque bleue (blue period); this year a double exhibition of his work was held at the Galerie Iris Clert and the Galerie Colette Allendy, both in Paris. In 1958, Klein emptied the Galerie Iris Clert, repainted the walls white, and presented the emptiness of the space as a work of art in the groundbreaking conceptual exhibition The Void (La voide). Also that year, he began using nude models as “living paintbrushes,” covering them in paint and instructing them in the pressing and dragging of their bodies across paper and canvas. These works, called Anthropometries (Anthropométries), recorded gestural impressions and the physical energy of the body. Also in 1957, Klein undertook a project for the decoration of the entrance hall of the new opera house in Gelsenkirchen, West Germany. He signed the first manifesto of the group Nouveaux Réalistes (New Realists, 1960–63), written in 1960 by critic Pierre Restany. In 1960, Klein patented International Klein Blue (IKB), a paint color he created with the help of a chemical retailer. Klein was inspired to develop IKB after searching for a shade of blue that effectively unlocked the endless void of space, eradicating the division of earth and sky. IKB, heavy in ultramarine, used a clear, colorless carrier (unlike traditional binders, which had a dulling effect) to suspend pure, dry pigment, maintaining the pigment’s original intensity.
In 1961, Klein was given a retrospective at the Museum Haus Lange, Krefeld, West Germany, and his first U.S. solo exhibition at the Leo Castelli Gallery, New York. He and architect Claude Parent collaborated that year on the design for fountains of water and fire, Fountains of Warsaw (Les fontaines de Varsovie), for the Palais de Chaillot, Paris. In 1962, Klein executed a plaster cast of Arman and took part in Antagonismes 2: L’objet (Antagonisms 2: the object) at the Musée des arts décoratifs, Paris. Shortly before his death he appeared in the film Mondo Cane (1962). Klein was the subject of a posthumous retrospective at Schirn Kunsthalle Frankfurt, Germany (2004–05), as well as the major retrospective Yves Klein: With the Void, Full Powers (2010–11), which was presented at the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Smithsonian Institution, Washington, D.C., as well as the Walker Art Center, Minneapolis. Klein died on June 6, 1962, in Paris.

- Rainbow Signed 1970s silkscreen & lithograph by pioneering female Fluxus artistBy Mary BauermeisterLocated in New York, NYMary Bauermeister Rainbow, 1973 Lithograph and silkscreen on creamy white paper Hand signed, dated and numbered 56/250 by the artist on the front 19 x 25.5 inches Unframed This work is on the permanent collection of various institutions like: Rice University, Samuel Dorksy Museum of Art, Rutgers Zimmerli Museum and Wheaton College Massachusetts. While studying the fringe sciences the 1970s, Bauermeister created Rainbow (1973), a lithograph and silkscreen. She uses a creamy white background as the base. Two intersecting diagonal bands of color transcend across the page, and black cursive lettering dances over the surface serving as a mind map of interweaving ideas. Through the central band, Bauermeister shifts through the color spectrum; she begins with red and finishes with violet. Inspired by music, she uses strokes of color that are rhythmically smeared across the lithograph. The surface lettering, a kind of visual poetry, explores her interest in human emotion and science. The viewer can see Bauermeister’s thoughts as they flow into one another through the use of words such as bliss, love, and healing. Bauermeister also includes a repetition of words such as cancer, sickness, and cure. The word cancer emerges from a cell-like shape. A careful study of the words shows that they may seem dark in nature; however, she juxtaposes these words against the cheerful title and colors. Perhaps the rainbow symbolizes a new hope, an inspiration for an optimistic future. -Courtesy to the Samuel Dorsky Museum of Art About Mary Bauermeister: A multidisciplinary artist known for her intricate and enigmatic assemblages, Mary Bauermeister (1934-2023) continues to defy categorization with layered works in a range of media. A precursory figure of the Fluxus movement—her studio was the meeting point for a number of defining artists of the avant-garde—her work plays an integral role in the discussion of art, both European and American, that emerged from the 1960s. Her reliefs and sculptures, which have incorporated drawing, text, found objects, natural materials and fabric, reference a plethora of concepts: from natural phenomena and astronomy to mathematics and language, as well as her own “spiritual-metaphysical experiences.” Maturing amidst the currents of Minimalism and Pop Art, Bauermeister’s art has resisted labels due to the singular expression of her interests and concerns, among them the simultaneous transience and permanence of the natural world with experimentations in transparency and magnification, multiplication and variation, structure and order, chance and ephemerality, introversion and extroversion. Her three-dimensional receptacles of thoughts, ideas, and notes contain visual, conceptual, and philosophical paradoxes that challenge perceptions and that offer literal and metaphorical windows into which one can glimpse the inner workings of the artist’s mind. - Courtesy of Michael Rosenfeld...Category
