This is a Autograph Greeting Letter Signed by Elie Gagnebin (Liège, 1891- Zurich, 1949) to the Countess and Patron of Arts, Anna Laetitia Pecci-Blunt, best-known as Mimi. Lausanne, January 9th 1937. One page, double-sided. In French. Excellent condition, including original envelope. The Swiss, not only geologist, but also patron of arts, Elie Gagnebin writes this letter to the Countess Pecci-Blunt, thanking her for the "merveilleux séjour à Rome" (merveilleuse stay at the Countess Roman palace") together with the conductor Igor Markevitch, and celebrating her for the artistic mission she was processing: enhance Italian art and make it dialogue with the foreign avandguards! "Votre activité pour la vie artistique et musicale à Rome, est généreuse et magnifique. vous avez fait plus et mieux, à vous seule, que toutes les organisations qui cherchent maintenaint à vous imiter". Elie Gagnebin (Liège, 1891- Zurich, 1949) After graduating in natural sciences in Lausanne, Elie Gagnebin made study in Paris and Grenoble. He was assistant and professor of paleontology and geology at the University of Lausanne from 1933 until his death. He carried out geological cartography in the Pre-Alps and Quaternary research in the Lake Geneva region. An excellent lecturer and popularizer, he was also an actor, philosopher, man of letters and music critic. Among the greatest and most active exponents of the French cultural life, whom he supported as a patron, he was a friend and collaborator of Jean Cocteau, Charles Ferdinand Ramuz, Ernest Ansermet, Igor Stravinskij and Igor Markevic, as well as a member of the Société de Belles-Lettres. Countess Anna Laetitia Pecci-Blunt (Rome, 1885 - Marlia, 1971) Best-known as "Mimì" Pecci-Blunt, the Italian noblewoman was an art collector, patron and nephew of Pope Leo XIII. Extremely volcanic, she was very active in the cultural field, opening numerous lounges, galleries and theaters. In 1919 she married Cecil Blumenthal, later changed to Blunt, a wealthy Jewish banker from New York, heir to an important collection of nineteenth-century French painting. His Parisian and Roman salons was frequented by artists and intellectuals of the caliber of Salvador Dalì, Paul Valery, Poulenc, Paul Claudel, and Aldo Palazzeschi!
